The Department of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Research Scientist, working in the DataWave project with Professor Pedram Hassanzadeh. The primary responsibilities for this position include developing machine learning (ML)-based models for parameterization or error correction of climate models, running numerical models to generate the required training data, and coupling the ML models to the numerical climate models. The research scientist will represent the team in the DataWave project and prepare reports and presentations.

Expected project length is 3 years. The expected start date is January 1, 2024.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • A PhD in atmospheric science, physics, applied math, or engineering.
  • At least three years of postdoctoral experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with data assimilation.
  • Experience with high-performance computing
