Job Description

Position Overview:

You will be responsible for the execution of engineering activities associated with the design and construction of the Grain Belt Express HVDC Transmission Line. You will be responsible for providing the overall technical guidance to a growing project team, including cross-functional coordination between other subject matter experts. As a Transmission Engineering Manager, you will report to the Director of Transmission Engineering and supervise the group of project and staff engineers.

About Grain Belt Express

Grain Belt Express is an 800-mile, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line project that will originate near Dodge City, Kansas. This multi-billion-dollar infrastructure investment will move renewable energy from where it is produced to markets that have a strong demand for low-cost, clean power. In your role you will also support the transmission engineering group with the development of the transmission systems required to connect the company’s generation projects to their point of interconnection. You will have the opportunity to build your own team, adapting to and anticipating project needs. You will serve as a mentor to your team, encouraging them to innovate and actively participate in the development of industry codes and standards to help distinguish Invenergy as an industry leader.

Responsibilities:

  • Engineering Manager and Team Responsibilities

  • Build and develop a team of highly qualified transmission engineers

  • Manage a team of staff engineers and project engineers by providing technical guidance, supporting project timelines, and proactively addressing resource needs

  • Provide technical training and training opportunities to engineering team

  • Provide career development training and opportunities to engineering team

  • Prepare engineering budgets to support project execution needs and team growth

  • Track design schedules, update all stakeholders, and ensure that critical dates related to electrical engineering tasks are met on time.

  • Engineering Design Management

  • Develop conceptual project designs that comply with all critical owner and interconnection requirements

  • Oversee technical and other project requirements that they are appropriately considered and anticipated throughout project lifecycle

  • Conduct thorough multi-level design reviews of physical and electrical drawings: Primarily high voltage and extra high voltage transmission lines

  • Define the scope of required transmission system design, studies, and review results for accuracy and compliance

  • Support project close out by organizing and transferring all as-built documentation to final project owner

  • Procurement and Construction Support

  • Coordinate with internal development and environmental compliance strategy teams to meet project needs through engineering support of development agreements and environmental permitting constraints

  • Review competitive bids for owner procured material. Supporting the purchasing of this equipment and manage suppliers throughout the engineering and commissioning process

  • Monitor construction progress both remotely and via on-site inspections and support resolution of any field issues. Attend on-site meetings with electrical construction contractors and in person coordination meetings with interconnection utilities.

  • Perform factory/equipment inspection and witness factory acceptance testing for major materials.

  • Engineering Group Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing department level and project specific specifications and requirements.

  • Prepare and validate electrical energy and transmission loss, right-of-way, preliminary line rating, and line impedance calculations

  • Coordinate with independent engineers and project partners to effectively navigate the technical due diligence process

  • Assist in the development of new projects by analyzing conceptual designs and RFQ specifications

  • Coordinate with operations engineering to incorporate lessons learned into new design reviews and specifications to continuously improve quality

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry technology through various training sessions and conferences

  • Participate in industry working groups and offer opinions to aid the development of new rules, codes and policies that affect renewable projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering

  • Working knowledge of NEC, NESC, ASCE, EPRI and ANSI/IEEE standards and codes

  • Seven (7) years relevant work experience

  • Ability to concurrently coordinate and manage multiple projects with various teams

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Technical writing skills

  • Software proficiency in PLS-CADD and other Power Line Systems software

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Visio, and Bluebeam

  • Some travel required (up to 25%)

  • Current driver license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or Professional Engineering license

  • Experience managing and building multi-disciplined engineering teams

  • Experience with HV/MV electrical equipment

  • Practical or field experience in reliability and maintenance of HV electrical systems

  • Proficiency in Auto CAD, Visio, and Bluebeam

  • Experience with Global Mapper, CAFEP, and ASPEN

  • Knowledge of renewable generation systems (wind turbine, solar panels, battery storage) and their controls

  • Member of a recognized professional institution or society

  • Published peer reviewed technical paper(s)
