Job Information

Job Summary:

Responsible for maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and minor installation of all types of electrical systems, devices and equipment. Performs duties throughout University buildings, property and facilities, in accordance with University standards and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, repair, troubleshoot, and replace, including the performance of minor installations, electrical systems or equipment that operate in all campus voltage ranges, both alternating and direct current.
  • Plan jobs as necessary, including task analysis, materials and tool lists and minor sketches, using either manual or computerized systems.
  • Work from blue prints, manufacturers\' manuals, electrical circuiting and wiring diagrams or other relevant documentation, as required.
  • Helps introduce new employees to shop protocol, procedures and campus applications and equipment. Instructs apprentices where applicable.
  • Requisitions materials and supplies using in-house procedures as needed. Keeps working area safe and clean.
  • Uses computers to enter and access job-related information.
  • Wears and/or uses appropriate safety equipment.
  • Undertakes training related to job duties as deemed necessary by the University.
  • Performs job-related duties as may be assigned.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • Completion of job-related Associate\'s degree (AA), preferred.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years actual work in the trade, including apprentice or vocational training, required.
  • Advanced job-related training programs, preferred.

Certifications:

  • Current valid driver\'s license and successfully passing the University\'s Motor Vehicle Records check process, required.
  • Other licenses or certificates needed for this position as required by law, changes in the law or other regulatory agency requirements, required.
  • NICET Fire Alarm Systems, Level 1 Certification, required.
  • NICET Fire Alarm Systems, Level II Certification, preferred.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of Chicago electrical code requirements, required.
  • Working knowledge of National Fire Protection (NFPA) code requirements, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to access computer programs and use or learn basic computer operations related to position requirements, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to write routine reports, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English both orally or in writing, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical functions relevant to the position, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair fire alarm systems, preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity and be physically capable of strenuous activity over extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and move loads appropriate to job requirements and be able to bend and work in a kneeling position for periods of time.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, be capable of workin at heights as required, be able to enter and work within tight spaces, and be able to withstand hot and cold temperatures.
  • This position requires periods of overtime.
