About the Department

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Chicago consists of 27 full time faculty members. Each faculty members brings with them expertise on a wide variety of Orthopaedic problems including: Bone and Soft Tissue Cancer, Bone Health and Fragility, Bone Infection Care, Foot and Ankle Care, Fracture Care, Hand and Wrist Care, Hip Care, Knee Care, Pediatric Orthopaedic Care, Shoulder and Elbow Care, Spine Care and Sports Medicine. Advanced Practice Providers are an important part of the care team and work as independent providers as part of our subspecialty teams.

Job Summary

The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation and research.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) (Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) to join our Joint Replacement Surgery clinical team. The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments for a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions, in particular for patients with osteoarthritis. Responsibilities include the evaluation, assessment, diagnosis, treatment of patients with musculoskeletal conditions in the outpatient clinical setting as well as providing surgical assistance in the operating rooms both in Hyde Park and at other clinical locations. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about the orthopaedic field and about providing exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician or in collaboration with a physician.
  • Provide support by seeing clinic patients independently at various clinical locations, in particular at the University of Chicago Advent LaGrange clinic, Ambulatory clinic in Hyde Park, and other offsite locations.
  • Hold independent clinics and provide care for new, return, and pre- and post-operative patients.
  • Perform in-office procedures (arthrocentesis and others).
  • Provide assistance in the Operating Room.
  • Works collaboratively within the multidisciplinary orthopaedic team, using advanced clinical skills and knowledge to provide comprehensive direct patient care and services to patients under the care of the University of Chicago Medical Center.
  • This individual will assume accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority, prescribing appropriate treatments, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient.
  • Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care.
  • Select appropriate communications approach to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.
  • Actively pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development.
  • Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.
  • May participate in health education in the community.
  • May participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician.
  • May prepare statistical reports and analysis setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit.
  • May participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
  • Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient\'s plan of care.
  • Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
