Kindle has changed the way books are published, sold, and read across the globe. Publishers and authors are central to the Kindle growth flywheel. We ensure accurate and timely payments and reporting to publishers and authors. We develop systems that ensures accurate accounting of every financial transaction. Software development engineers on the Kindle Finance & Accounting Tech Engineering team are responsible for implementing, maintaining, and supporting the code for Amazon’s various book royalty systems, including those that power Kindle Unlimited, print-on-demand, and all Kindle purchases across the globe. You will closely work with product managers and business teams to understand the domain and design to meet those and future requirements. You will need to be able to articulate technology choices and decisions to a diverse group and be able to influence them. In all, this role is an exciting mix of solid technical complexity, partnering with the business team, and delivery excellence. You will be ably supported by a team of engineers and there will be leadership growth opportunity to mentor junior engineers.

With nuanced contracts, multiple taxation laws, and different accounting laws across countries - this domain is ripe for disrupting through LLMs. The projects in our team offers opportunity to learn and apply LLMs and generative AI to various business problems we have.

Key job responsibilities

The ideal candidates will have solid experience in architecture, design & delivery of platforms built preferably on Java and Amazon Web Services technologies. Candidates with proficiency in building data intensive, performant applications or platforms will also be considered. You will be passionate and obsess about providing a premium customer experience.

A day in the life

As an SDE-II you will work with business leaders on the business requirements, translate the requirements to the tech solutions, look for opportunity to simplify through latest tech including generative AI and LLMs, and work with the team to implement the ideas. You will be supported by senior SDEs and PEs in the org to learn and grow your expertise. This is one of the few teams where you have very little operational load as we build most of the solutions from scratch.

About the team

We build tech solutions for business problems related to Kindle financials covering contracts, tax compliance, and accounting compliance. We serve the needs for the publishers and authors world wide. We ensure accuracy and timeliness of payments and reporting - we pay what we say and say what we pay.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
