Farrar Corporation Lab Technician for Foundry - Located in Norwich, KS in Cheney, Kansas

Foundry Lab Technician

Is doing a job correctly important to you?  When you special order something do you expect it to arrive as you specified?  Are you willing to speak up when your order is incorrect?  If any of these scenarios describe you, then the Farrar Corporation, a ductile iron foundry and machine shop, located in Norwich, KS is looking for you to join our quality control team and we will provide the necessary training.  Working within the quality control department in our foundry will have you performing testing procedures on our sand quality, iron quality, and final inspection of our finished product shipped across the United States.    

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and process iron tensile bars; machine and then break them

  • Conduct hardness test (BHN) on castings and tensile bars

  • Conduct sand tests for permeability, hardness, and properties

  • Create, maintain, and update all quality documentation for foundry operations, which may include molding, core making, grinding, finishing, inspection, and shipping

  • Learn the laboratory and chemical process for making iron, to support and backup lab personnel for vacations and time away from work

  • Support and backup machine shop quality for vacations and time away from work

  • Signing authority for shipment to customer and/or next process

  • Scrap review with Quality Assurance Manager and foundry team

  • Familiarity and use of quality inspection gauges and equipment

  • Champion for outside service required for quality processes; outside sand testing, outside tensile bar testing, mag-particle, x-ray, and other processes outside of Farrar

  • Comfortable working with MS Office products Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Manufacturing background/environment preferred, but not required

  • Knowledge of ISO 9000 and quality control preferred, but not required

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to work and interact in both a team environment and solo workspace

    Work Schedules

  • 40 hour weeks

  • Flexible start time

  • Typical schedule is Monday – Thursday 6:00 to 4:30;

  • Overtime as needed to meet client deadlines and timelines; Fridays for 6-10 hours.
