McLaren Health Care Surgical Technologist I - McLaren Careers in Cheboygan, Michigan

Surgical Technologist I prepares for scheduled surgical procedures, arranges sterile set-up of instrumentation according to established procedures. Assists the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies, holding retractors and anticipating surgeons’ needs during the course of surgery. Cleans operating room and stores equipment and supplies.

Responsibilities:

  • Scrubs for cases according to established sterile procedures and changes into appropriate operative attire; dons sterile gown and gloves and assist surgeon with same.

  • Assists surgeon with draping of patient maintaining sterile technique.

  • Passes instruments, sponges, sutures and other sterile supplies and equipment as needed.

  • Receives surgical specimens, places in appropriate container and fixative (if required) at end of procedure.

  • Counts sponges, needles and instruments according to policy.

  • Cleans surgical suite according to established protocol ensuring that all disposable items are placed in the appropriate bags, i.e. Biohazard Red bags for any items containing blood or body fluids.

  • Provides visualization of the operative site during the operative procedure.

  • Assists in providing hemostasis to the surgeon.

  • Expedites the operative procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon.

  • Participates in orientation of new colleagues.

  • Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

Required:

  • Must possess knowledge of sterile technique and anatomy and physiology normally acquired by graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist Program or at least 2 years of experience in like size or larger surgical program with similar surgical cases.

  • BLS Certification.

Preferred:

  • Two years of experience.
