University of Virginia Research Assistant Professor, Thomas Loughran JR, MD Lab in Charlottesville, Virginia

The Cancer Center at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Assistant Professor to join the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology & Oncology in the laboratory of Thomas Loughran Jr., MD ( https://www.loughranlab.com/ ). Our lab specializes in studying and treating hematologic malignancies, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and large granular lymphocyte (LGL) leukemia. Successful applicants will join our collaborative team of scientists dedicated to uncovering the mechanistic differences among AML cases, utilizing advanced systems biology approaches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement systems approaches to integrate multi-modal biomolecular measurements, pharmacological screening, and experimental assays.

  • Design and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret complex data, and develop algorithms for high-throughput 'omics' data processing.

  • Develop and apply statistical methods to correlate biomolecular measurements with drug response behaviors and identify potential combination targets for experimental validation.

  • Manage and guide various research projects within the lab and coordinate collaborative projects with investigators at UVA and other institutions within a multi-institutional P01 team.

  • Ensure the safe storage and management of diverse data types.

  • Regularly present research updates to the team and mentor junior investigators.

Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Responsibilities:

  • Analyze large-scale genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data.

  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics pipelines.

  • Utilize computational models to simulate biological processes.

  • Stay current with the latest advancements in bioinformatics tools and technologies and integrate them into the lab's research.

Additional Duties:

  • Contribute to writing scientific manuscripts, abstracts, and grant applications.

  • Demonstrate a strong track record in scientific publications and presentations.

  • Maintain effective oral and written communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioengineering, or a closely related field.

  • Proven experience in bioinformatics and computational biology.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team.
