This position will be responsible in aiding the Managing Director with the overall management of the Commercial Surety’s West operation including Underwriting, Account Meetings, Marketing, and Talent Development. The West includes the Midwest, Southcentral, Southwest, and Northwest regions. You will be responsible for the Portfolio Management of the commercial surety book of business and, alongside leaders of the NSO, work directly with the Head of Commercial Surety and East/West Managing Directors to set and act on strategies for the growth of the commercial surety LOB. This role requires an institutional mindset and an appreciation for the role commercial surety serves within the Hartford.

You will be responsible for underwriting decisions within your authority and recommendations to the Managing Director for risks outside your authority.

Home Office Bond Underwriting Manager:

  • Represents Bond by demonstrating superior underwriting expertise, high-level decision-making skills, and comprehensive business knowledge.

  • Supports Regional Office sales and service objectives.

  • Monitors and assesses the implementation of underwriting guidelines, sales objectives, service standards and operational efficiencies.

  • Rigorously analyzes underwriting information and assesses most complex risk within the framework of company standards.

  • Has a high degree of autonomous decision-making authority and manages a portfolio of business in one product line?

  • Helps set territory strategies for offices in the territory.

  • Serves as referral underwriter for regional offices.

  • Assists RO underwriters and managers in creating solutions for customers.

  • Co-travels in the territory to understand the customer needs and attend meetings with clients.

  • Negotiates win/win solutions.

  • Analyzes the portfolio of business in the territory.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS required in finance, accounting or economics or advance degree preferred.

  • AFSB designation preferred.

  • Typically requires 5+ years of surety/bond underwriting experience.

  • Must be a multi-dimensional team player, must possess strong product knowledge, sales ability and underwriting expertise.

  • Acceptable scores on the underwriting assessment

  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills

  • An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions.

  • High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills

  • Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes.

  • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills

Salary $135,760-$203,640

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$135,760 - $203,640
