County of Charlotte 911 Emergency Dispatcher in Charlotte Court House, Virginia

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VIRGINIA EMERGENCY 911 TELECOMMUNICATOR (FULL-TIME) GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Emergency 911 Telecommunicator is responsible for receiving, classifying, processing, and dispatching all calls for service, including both emergency and non-emergency calls, at Charlotte Countys E911 Center. The position works under the direction of the Charlotte County 911 Coordinator. The E911 Center dispatches law enforcement, rescue units, and also receives some calls for other local, state, and federal agencies including Animal Control, the Department of Wildlife Resources, VDOT, and the Virginia State Police. The dedicated 911 team serves as a vital link for our emergency services personnel and is a lifeline for our citizens and our community during times of crisis. SALARY RANGE: $35,342-$40,643 (Based on Experience) ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Receiving, classifying, processing, and dispatching calls for service, both emergency and non-emergency Dispatching law enforcement, rescue units, and fire personnel in accordance with established procedures Utilizing a computer aided dispatch (CAD) system to enter and track calls for service and monitor dispatched unit's activity Keeping units in the field updated of new information as it's received Entering, updating, and retrieving information from a variety of computer systems including the Virginia Criminal Network (VCIN) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Disseminating information regarding vehicle registration, driving records, warrants, and protective orders Operating a multi-frequency radio system for broadcasting and toning REQUIRED QUALITIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, and SKILLS: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) A valid Virginia driver's license Basic computer skills including the ability to type Knowledge of basic office equipment Ability to actively listen to others to gain an understanding of their needs and the specific situation, and assertively being able to control these conversations while maintaining a professional attitude Ability to articulate and speak clearly on the phone and radio Ability to manage stressful situations efficiently and solve problems within the scope of responsibility Ability to maintain confidentiality Ability to work both as a team player and independently Ability to sit for extended periods of time Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes either 8 or 12-hour shifts, day and night shifts, as well as weekends, holidays, and on-call PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Not required): Emergency Communications and/or Emergency Services experience NAED EMD certification SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must obtain EMD certification within 90 days of employment Must attend DCJS Basic Dispatch Academy within the first year of employment Must successfully pass drug screening, background checks, and fingerprinting prior to hiring PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties are normally performed in an office setting in a seated position where no hazardous conditions are prevalent; however, the job may require frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping and the occasional light lifting of items up to twenty (20) pounds in weight. Extremes in noise, temperature and pollutants are minimal. Frequent sustained operation of office equipment is required.
