Actalent Medical Technologist in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Description:

The primary purpose of this position is the performance of serological testing on potential transfusion recipients and donor blood, diagnostic analysis and consultation, and the modification and release of blood components for transfusion. The technologist is assigned to a shift but they may work other shifts as needed. This position works in the Component area. This area performs product modification such as leukocyte reduction by filtration, deglycerolizing and washing RBC’s. This area irradiates and issues products for transfusion, splits blood products, thaws frozen products, prepares syringe aliquots for infants and pools cryoprecipitate, receives products from the supplier, returns non-transfused products, and transports products to Carolina Air Care (CAC). The Component area performs product preparation procedures involving multiple steps such as Modified Whole Blood for exchange transfusions, and specialized washing procedures when approved by the medical directors. This position answers the telephone and evaluates component orders. This position works in the Compatibility area. This area performs routine pretransfusion serological tests such as ABO/Rh Grouping, Antibody Detection and Identification, Crossmatching, and, Phenotyping. This lab also routinely performs Direct Antiglobulin Tests, and Fetal Bleed Screening Tests. This area also performs advanced testing and analyses to help in the diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases. Some examples of these tests include various adsorptions, elutions, titrations, separations and neutralizations. The following duties and responsibilities are also included: a) Teaching. The technologists perform bench level instruction and discuss laboratory procedures and policies with the CLS students and new employees. They complete checklists and evaluations on each individual. b) Peer review of test results. Technologists review test results from the previous shift as a timely Quality Assurance measure. This assures that significant technical, clerical and omission errors are discovered and corrected prior to or shortly after the release of any red cell product. c) Quality Control. Technologists perform daily reagent and equipment quality control as well as monthly, quarterly and annual quality control. d) Special Projects. Technologists are called upon to inventory supplies, make special reagents, evaluate new products/tests, collect data, write/revise new procedures, and participate on work teams. They perform all other duties as necessary for the laboratory to function and grow.
