Starting pay rate: $17.00/hr

Position Function: Under the direction of the Food Service Director, performs a variety of environmental services to maintain the kitchen facilities in a neat, orderly, and sanitary manner.

Unit Based Essential Functions and Responsibilities-Environmental

  1. Demonstrates service excellence and patient and family centered care by showing respect, honesty, fairness and a positive attitude toward all customers.

  2. Maintains confidentiality.

  3. Demonstrates dependability, to include attendance and punctuality.

  4. Is accountable - takes initiative and ownership of issues.

  5. Displays a professional demeanor. Represents hospital in a positive way. Has a compassionate working relationship with patients and families.

  6. Assumes personal responsibility for 2-way communication. Communicates and listens effectively with patients, families, coworkers, other departments, physicians/providers and community.

  7. Supports coworkers, initiatives and a patient and family centered philosophy; pitches in; does own part and helps others.

  8. Works to continuously improve work environment/processes (Performance Improvement). Demonstrates a patient and family centered focus when considering/developing improvement solutions.

  9. Represents willingness/enthusiasm to create, embrace and facilitate change.

Job Class Specifics- Environmental

  1. Hangs cubicle curtains, drapes, etc., and inspects for tears, holes, signs of wear; regularly assesses the physical environment for needed repairs/replacement; notifies supervisor by end of shift.

  2. Completes Housekeeping Services Work Order at end of shift to accurately reflect completion of assigned tasks, incomplete tasks, and items in need of attention.

  3. Maintains respect for rights and privacy.

  4. Performs all duties in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures; regularly reviews all bulletin boards.

  5. Maintains ability to assist in other positions, responds positively to abrupt scheduling changes during times of increased patient activity or short staffing situations.

  6. Coordinates efforts without interference to patient.

  7. Supplies and equipment are utilized appropriately (i.e., solutions are mixed correctly and products are used as intended).

  8. Reviews daily assignments; selects and prepares appropriate solutions according to procedure.

  9. Follows established cleaning/disinfecting procedures when assigned to O.R., Labor and Delivery, Sterile Processing, Isolation; wears gowning, head, face, and foot coverings, as appropriate.

  10. Maintains all equipment in safe and working condition.

  11. Personal protective equipment guidelines and procedures are followed to maintain personal protection and infection control guidelines.

  12. Moves and cleans furniture.

  13. Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors.

  14. Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture.

  15. Empties and cleans wastebaskets, compactors and large refuse containers; transports trash and waste to disposal area.

  16. Sets up tables and chairs in lecture centers or conference rooms.

  17. Wet mops, cleans, waxes, and buffs corridors.

  18. Washes lights, walls, windows, air vents, etc., using appropriate cleaning solutions; employs established safety practices when using stepladders.

  19. Moves furniture, equipment, etc. in lecture centers.

  20. As directed, loads recycled materials onto truck; uses assistive devices as appropriate to task.

  21. Completes discharge bed cleaning in a fashion that maintains clean and ready beds on all floors at all times and prioritizes areas of heavy admissions as needed.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Classified as medium work by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles:

May exert 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible (up to 10 pounds) force constantly in order to move objects.

  • Stands and walks throughout department constantly on tile surfaces.

  • Lifts up to 35 pounds to and from all levels constantly.

  • Pushes/pulls carts and equipment of up to 50 pounds occasionally throughout the department.

  • Occasionally climbs and balances on ladders at heights of up to 5 feet.

  • Lifts 40 to 50 pounds to and from floor to waist level on an occasional basis.

  • Carries up to 20 pounds occasionally for distances up to 20 feet.

  • Frequently bends, squats and twists.

  • Near-visual acuity in order to detect dust, debris, etc.

  • Auditory acuity sufficient to hear normal voice tone when not facing an individual or by phone.

Mental Requirements: Possesses good general mental health; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form; ability to speak, read, and write in English.

Working Environment: Work is performed in an indoor area which may be warm and humid; frequent exposure to hazards which could cause injury (i.e.: slips and falls, strong chemical cleaning compounds, strains from working overhead).

Reporting Structure: Reports to Director of Food & Nutrition.

  5. Follows HACCP guidelines for sanitation.

  6. Attends all in-services.

  7. Prioritizes workload at the beginning of the shift to meet important guidelines.

  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

  9. Assists with catered events when necessary.

Qualifications and Standards

Education: High school graduate or G.E.D. preferred.

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Experience in healthcare setting or cleaning industry preferred.
