Performs a variety of general support duties in specimen procurement, clerical, central processing, and/or other assigned areas at an entry skill level. Performs and interprets limited procedures in the Pathology Department at all times. May perform minor preventative tasks as well as ordering of laboratory supplies.

Job Class Specifics

  1. Understands and follows hospital fire and safety procedures; knows personal role in case of a fire.

  5. Performs limited maintenance of laboratory equipment.

  6. Rearranges workload if emergencies arise in the department.

  7. Is responsible for assessing specimen acceptability according to Standard Operating Procedures...

  8. Can assist with specimen ordering, receipt into the laboratory and tracking.

  9. Demonstrates the process for accurate and complete patient registration into the computer system, with follow up phone call, if necessary, to physician offices to obtain necessary information.

  10. Answers pneumatic tube-system, processes samples and delivers to appropriate departments

  11. Correctly identifies and labels all specimen types. Understands and follows proper labeling placement on samples. Takes action to reconcile identification concerns.

  12. Places samples onto designated instruments for testing by the technicians and/or technologists

  13. Assists in preparation of specimens being sent to reference laboratories, i.e. pours off specimen into accurately labeled aliquot tubes, protects appropriate specimens from light, etc.

  14. Files specimens in tube storage through LIS as directed.

  15. Provides clerical support for laboratory.

  16. Assists in the phoning and faxing of test results.

  17. Scans/Archives documents as needed

  18. Provides accurate and complete instructions to patients and other customers of the laboratory.

  19. Accurately weighs and measures chemicals for specified specimen containers.

  20. Exhibits and demonstrates a thorough understanding of and performs all staining procedures within the Microbiology and Hematology Departments

  21. Does culture setup; plating specimens on appropriate media and incubates in required conditions

  22. Performs waived testing as directed.

  23. Understands and follows the process for specimen adequacy of sputum cultures.

  24. Exhibits a thorough knowledge of safety requirements in the Laboratory as well as special requirements in the Microbiology Department

  25. Exhibits and demonstrates a thorough understanding of rapid antigen testing within the Microbiology Department.

  26. Cleans countertops a minimum of once per shift or as required to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.

  27. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Classified as medium work by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles: May exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible (up to 10 pounds) force constantly in order to move objects. Stands occasionally on tile or carpet during a normal shift.

  • Walks throughout hospital occasionally.

  • Sits on a hard or cushioned chair frequently.

  • Lifts up to 50 pounds to and from floor to waist level on an occasional basis.

  • Carries up to 15 pounds occasionally for distances of up to 100 feet.

  • Pushes/pulls up to 125 pounds from floor to floor occasionally.

  • Occasionally bends and squats from higher to lower levels during normal shift.

  • Occasionally twists and kneels.

  • Reaches occasionally to heights of up to 2 feet overhead.

  • Manual dexterity, digital sensitivity, and flexibility (i.e. ability to program equipment and utilize a keyboard).

  • Good hand/eye coordination.

  • Ability to occasionally operate hand and foot controls on clinitron beds, stretchers, mediman lifts, wheelchairs, and bed scales.

  • Near visual acuity with color perception in order to view computer screen and decipher fine print.

  • Auditory acuity; able to hear telephone conversation, overhead pagers, and alarms.

Mental Demands Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form in order to take notes/minutes of meetings, take dictation, and relate to staff and others; ability to speak, read, and write the English language; ability to efficiently and effectively handle multiple demands simultaneously as a result of working under the pressure of deadlines.

Working Environment: Work is performed in a well-ventilated, indoor laboratory environment. Possible exposure to patients with infectious diseases and/or to bodily fluids which may contain infectious agents.

Reporting Structure: Reports to Section Manager; in his/her absence, reports to the most senior tech on duty and/or the Administrative Director of the Laboratory. Establishes and maintains working relationships with other technical and clerical staff, medical staff, nursing service, other departments of the hospital, and with patients, their families and visitors.

Qualifications and Standards

Education: High School diploma required; course work in medical technology, biotechnology, chemistry or biology preferred.
