Division: Resource Management, Heritage Sites Program Reports to: Crew Supervisor, Field Director Worksite: Heritage Sites Building Work Hours: M-F, 8:00am 4:30pm (occasionally work 10-hours days) LLBO Status: Non-Exempt Safety Sensitive: No License/Certification Requirements: Valid MN driver's license, current insurance or be insurable Summary: Works with Heritage Sites personnel to conduct archaeological field and laboratory work. This is a scientific field requiring both physical fitness and academic capabilities. Duties/Responsibilities: Conducts archaeological fieldwork, including shovel testing, pedestrian survey and formal excavation (must be prepared to carry water and lunch on your person while conducting survey in remote locations). Access to vehicles may be restricted as many areas are only accessible on foot. Completes daily field survey notes, describing project, survey strategies, environmental and topographic conditions and vegetation. May also be required to complete archaeological site forms. Assists with mapping and documentation of archaeological sites found during survey. Assists with archaeological laboratory work, including washing, identifying, weighing, counting, sorting and cataloging artifacts recovered during field investigations. Must abide by all backcountry restrictions imposed for enviromnental protection, including fireworks and campfire restrictions, "no motorized vehicle" trails, closed roads, biologically and culturally sensitive areas. Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics at all times. Responsible f r keeping work area neat and orderly. Adhere to policies governing staff conduct. Ability to travel in and out of the state and out-of-town projects on a possibly regular basis. Understanding and sensitivity to Native American culture. Physical Requirements: Must be able to work outdoors for prolonged periods of time and to endure potentially heavy manual labor (walking, standing, stooping, digging) during most types of weather (rain, snow heat, cold), in all types ofterrain (marshy, hilly uplands areas of heavy tree-fall, etc.). Ability to endure (and minimize personal exposure to) hazards associated with forest activities, such as biting insects, poisonous plants, falling trees and limbs and wildlife. Must be able to walk through such variable terrain for up to eight hours per day, while carrying personal water/food and bulky equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
