Professional Staff Nurse, BSN (RN)

Are you a Registered Nurse (RN) or Graduate Nurse looking to advance in your career by gaining experience in an ortho surgical unit?

UPMC Carlisle is looking for a Professional Staff Nurse for the Ortho Surgery unit!

Position Summary:

· Full-Time, 36 hours per week (3, 12-hours shifts)

· Night Shift ! (7pm – 7am)

· Every other weekend, every other holiday, no on-call

· 32 bed unit

This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus!

  • Graduate Nurse (no experience): 2-year commitment, $15,000 sign-on bonus + Monthly Loan Repayment of up to $20,000 over a span of 3-years (2023/2024 grads).

  • 1+ years of experience: 2-year commitment, $20,000 sign-on bonus.

Unit Description / Highlights:

· The 3 rd Floor Ortho Surgery unit focuses on post operative patient who have undergone surgeries that need a short inpatient stay to ensure medical stability.

· This unit specializes in joint replacements and bariatric post-op surgeries.

· Due to the nature of our patients’ inpatient needs, we experience a quick turnaround which makes the unit fast and exciting!

Purpose

The Professional Staff Nurse (RN) is a valuable member of the care delivery team – setting the standards for the quality of patient care. This role provides a variety of patient care activities to a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication, and collaboration with colleagues.

The Professional Staff Nurse encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision. In this role, establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with physicians, other healthcare professionals, patients, and their families is vital to achieving the best patient outcomes and continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nurse Demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.

Responsibilities:

  • Creates daily goals and plans of care for patients, involving the patient as partner and considering their individual needs in a holistic way.

  • Utilizes critical thinking skills and knowledge of evidence-based practices (relative to specialty area) to improve their patients’ plans of care.

  • Practices solid communication skills and can articulate the patient's condition to other care providers, offering recommendations for changes in patient care / unit practices & communicating any safety hazards to peers and leadership.

  • Provides patient documentation that is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.

  • Creates a healing environment for patients by applying a Relationship Based Care framework to their nursing process.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles (and/or teaching children if applicable) and applies in teaching of patients, families, students and new staff.

  • Supports the development of students, new staff and colleagues, may serve as a preceptor.

Qualifications:

  • Zero to 2-years of RN experience required - GNs are welcome to apply!

  • BSN preferred, but not required (**please note salary range above includes BSN differential)

Additional Qualifications:

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.

  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

  • Completion of UPMC student nurse internship or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.

  • Good clinical judgment.

  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.

  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • Must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.Clearances must be dated within 90 days

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)

  • Act 34

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
