Job Description:

Field Engineering Specialist providing project and technical support for the installation, grooming, operation, maintenance, and modification of complex electronic systems installed onboard the Launch Area Support Ship (LASS). Systems include RF Instrumentation, Satellite and Underwater Communications, Telemetry, Data Transmission and Recording, System Interfaces, and Software Operating Systems.

Responsible for projects and processes within the LASS group, achieving operational targets for LASS electronics systems assembly, assessment, testing, and operation in support of the Navy customer. Support operational Navy testing events as a watch stander at sea onboard the Launch Area Support ship, with positions impacting flight test safety and data collection. Responsible to make short-notice independent assessments and decisions for technical areas of responsibility during critical and time-sensitive testing.

Assigned tasking requires communication within the LASS group, as well as coordination with external supporting contractors and Navy customers. Requires guiding, coaching, and training other employees on areas of responsibility for project execution. Support of electronics systems includes general analysis, problem solving, procedure/process development, and innovations.

Requires some near and long-distance travel to provide contracted services on a varying schedule, including periods at sea on a Military Sealift Command vessel. Requires supporting various tasking at the home location, to include inventory control, production builds, repairs, systems grooming, on-the-job training, mentoring others, maintaining logbooks, filing reports, and other tasking as assigned. Requires the ability to climb at least 50’ from the deck of the ship and must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.

Essential Functions:

  • Travel up 20-40% of the time, mostly to sea for equipment or mission support.

  • Frequently work on and embark on surface vessels, including underway periods of weeks at a time.

  • Ability to climb and work on elevated platforms.

  • Support weekend work, as required and when at sea on the support ship.

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience, or 2 years post-Secondary/Associates Degree and a minimum of 8 years of prior related experience. Other relevant military electronics courses/certifications or 4 years of experience in military electronics systems/Strategic Weapons Systems may be considered in place of the Associate or Bachelors degree education requirements.

  • Possess, or have the ability to obtain, a Secret Clearance.

  • 4 years of experience with analog and digital test equipment to troubleshoot, test and/or validate complex electronic systems.

  • 4 years of experience conducting electronic troubleshooting and repair with quality assurance workmanship skills.

  • 4 years of experience conducting electronic systems installation and testing.

    Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with RF/satellite systems.

  • Ability to operate independently with general supervision.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills and the ability to coordinate within the group and with external customers on areas of project responsibility.

  • General analysis, problem solving, and innovation in assigned area of responsibility.

  • Ability to review, follow, and provide recommended improvements to documented procedures.

  • Networking skills including but not limited to VLANs, TCP/IP, IPv4/6, dynamic routing (OSPF/BGP), static routing, VPN tunneling, and access lists.

  • IPC-610/620 and J-STD certifications.

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
