Primary Responsibilities

St. Lawrence University is currently seeking applicants for a Graduate Assistant Program Coordinator for the Outdoor Program. This 10-month, student position (August 1- May 31) is targeted toward graduate students seeking a Master’s degree. Remuneration includes a competitive stipend, student health insurance, and eligibility for tuition remission (6 graduate classes per year in the University’s graduate program).

The Outdoor Program provides professional quality outdoor recreational and educational programming to the campus community, locally in the Adirondack Mountains, throughout North America, and internationally. Instruction and guiding are done with Outdoor Program professional staff and trained student guides unless outside guide services are required. Our goal within the Outdoor Program, aligned with the Mission Statement, is to provide a safe, but challenging environment for students to develop their leadership skills, while encouraging a sustainable form of environmental and wilderness ethic.

Position responsibilities include the following:

  • Development, supervision, and management of all aspects of St. Lawrence University’s Outdoor Pre-Orientation trips, with support from other department staff

  • Guide a field trip during January break and/or Spring break.

  • Support OP Director and Assistant Director with Outdoor Studies courses offered in the Fall and Spring semester.

  • Management of one campus facility including overseeing student staff (Gear Room, Climbing Wall, or Canoe House)

  • Supervision, management, and continued development of a technical skill program (either climbing, paddling, skiing, or mountain biking)

  • Design and implement one campus wide event per semester.

  • Administrative duties include planning and marketing events and trips, field support and logistics, and student outreach and mentoring.

  • Other duties as assigned to support the Outdoor Studies Department and the Center for the Environment

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.

  • Experience leading and instructing multi-day technical trips, leading extended wilderness trips, and/or teaching outdoor leadership.

  • Wilderness First Responder & CPR or the ability to obtain before hire.

  • A valid driver’s license and ability to meet the requirements to drive University vehicles required.

  • Must apply and be accepted in the graduate program at St. Lawrence University.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications from appropriate organizations ( AMGA , ACA , PCIA )

  • Professional experience with organizations such as NOLS , Outward Bound, or similar programs including college Outdoor Programs.
