Subject Matter Expert – Airspace Design

The KBR team, located in Cambridge, MA, augments The Volpe Center expertise in its support to FAA safety mission and Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) objectives by developing technologies to enhance the operational capabilities of existing air traffic management systems and procedures. KBR seeks an airspace design SME to support the development of next generation airspace design tool for the National Airspace System. The airspace design tool will upgrade three current FAA tools [Central Altitude Reservation Function (CARF), Special Activity Airspace Creator/Editor (SAACE), and Temporary Flight Restriction Builder (TFR-B)].

Essential Job Functions:

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Provide operational and technical airspace design expertise to the project team.

  • Lead discussions between the development and customer teams to capture business requirements, stories, use cases, business flows and acceptance criteria.

  • Implement systems engineering principles / practices across systems and provide leadership to define the design concepts for the new airspace tool set.

  • Collaborate to define requirements and interfaces.

  • Support the project team through the Agile project lifecycle including requirements, development, testing/quality assurance and production release.

  • Collaborate across teams to gain consensus for project direction and requirements agreement.

  • Assist in evaluating design of new and existing systems to judge their functionality, effectiveness, reliability, performance, usage,

  • Recommends changes to existing systems design to achieve requirements.

  • Manage customer and management expectations and communicate effectively to both.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S./B.A. in Computer Science, engineering or relevant technical field

  • 3 + years of relevant experience

  • Experience with airspace design (FAA or DoD)

  • Demonstrated experience with airspace design concepts and tools

  • Security Clearance Requirement: ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

  • Solid collaboration, communication, and business relationship skills

  • Strong written, presentation, and facilitation skills, motivated, self-directed, results oriented.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence and motivate others.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with FAA

  • Experience with current FAA airspace design tools such as Central Altitude Reservation Function (CARF), Special Activity Airspace Creator/Editor (SAACE), and Temporary Flight Restriction Builder (TFR-B)

  • Understands NOTAMs

  • Understands FAA data standards Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM)

  • Experience with Agile and scrum processes

  • Experience with Jira or similar tools

  • Understands AWS cloud

  • Understands automated testing
