CRA has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic senior scientist with expertise in maritime operations, data collection/analysis, uncrewed vehicles, sensing, perception, autonomy, simulation, machine learning, and/or computer vision to lead cutting-edge intelligent systems research and development applied to real-world challenges. Example projects you would work on include:

  • Multi-sensor fusion for maritime surface and subsurface object detection, classification, and tracking

  • Underwater communications optimization

  • Underwater acoustic/sonar data collection and exfiltration

  • Long-duration uncrewed vehicle technologies

  • Autonomous behavior development for UxVs

  • Test, evaluation, and validation of autonomous systems

  • Mission planning and operations optimization technologies

  • Oceanographic data collection and analysis

In this role you will develop and apply concepts crossing multiple fields including computer vision, machine learning, signal processing, information visualization, autonomy, data collection/analysis, and vehicle capability enhancement. You will work in tightly-knit, project-oriented teams as a Principal Investigator with other scientists and engineers to design, prototype, implement, and deploy leading edge concepts into mission support capabilities. You will have the opportunity to support and lead research and development programs in support of maritime domain capabilities. You will have the opportunity to leverage CRA’s extensive intelligent systems portfolio, attend technical and domain area conferences, and move the state of the art forward.

How will you make an impact?

  • Design new methods or apply existing techniques to solve complex problems across a range of sensing, perception, autonomy, and maritime operations challenges

  • Formulate new ideas and develop proposals for new capabilities

  • Write technical papers and reports on existing work

  • Present your work to stakeholders, collaborators, operators, and the research community

  • Guide prototype and product development while engaging with end-user communities and technology partners

What Do you need?

  • M.S. in Engineering, Science, or related area, with Ph.D. preferred

  • 10+ years in oceanography, marine vehicle autonomy, machine learning, sensor processing and analysis, or related field

  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a security clearance

  • Experience directly interacting with customers, users, and technical experts

  • Experience leading programs as a principal investigator

  • Experience writing technical proposals and generating new business

  • Experience translating user community needs and system features into actionable requirements for engineering teams to produce technical capabilities
