POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting a Spooling Welder to work at our Shepard Shop (9423 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 4R6).  The Spooling Welder is responsible for performing complex welding tasks on various projects, ensuring the integrity and safety of critical components. Reporting to the Spooling Supervisor, the Spooling Welder will possess a keen eye for precision and a strong commitment to safety, they meticulously adhere to welding codes, industry standards, and project specifications. The Spooling Welder possess expertise in various welding techniques, including SMAW, MCAW, GMAW, and FCAW, and have a deep understanding of metals and alloys commonly used in welding applications.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):

Welding Expertise (Weighting 80%) Interpretation of Specifications

  • Read and comprehensively interpret welding process specifications, including weld procedure specifications (WPS), provided in project documentation.

  • Ensure clear understanding of welding symbols, geometric tolerances, and special instructions embedded within project plans and blueprints.

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of a wide range of metals, alloys, and welding materials commonly utilized in welding applications, including carbon steel and occasionally stainless steel.

    Measurement & Installation

  • Prepare materials for welding by performing tasks such as cleaning, preheating, and applying necessary treatments, as specified in the WPS. Confirm that materials are in optimal condition to facilitate successful welds.

  • Maintain clean and deburred edges to promote high-quality welds.

  • Recognize and address deviations from specified tolerances to achieve precise alignment and fit.

    Proficient Welding Processes & Techniques

  • Execute welding tasks utilizing a variety of processes, including but not limited to: SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding), and Metal-Core (MCAW).

  • Adapt to the specific welding process required for each project based on material type, thickness, and project specifications.

  • Produce welds that consistently meet or exceed project specifications, quality standards, and industry codes.

  • Experience working with positioners to roll well spools on various projects

  • Ensure all welding is completed in a manner to prevent distortion or shrinkage.

    COMPLIANCE (Weighting 15%) Quality Control

  • Strictly adhere to established weld procedures (WPS) provided for each welding task, ensuring that all parameters, techniques, and guidelines are followed meticulously.

  • Comply with quality control measures during welding to verify that each weld meets or exceeds the requirements specified in the WPS.

  • Conduct visual inspections for every weld to ensure quality.

    Health & Safety

  • Identify potential safety hazards and risks associated with welding activities.

  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), adherence to lockout/tagout procedures, and compliance with relevant safety regulations.

  • Conduct risk/hazard and equipment assessments and implement mitigation measures to minimize hazards associated with spooling activities or any related work.

  • Ensure full compliance with all safety certifications and tickets relevant to the job, including but not limited to: Welding certification, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, First Aid, Fire Safety and Hazardous Materials Handling.

    CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT (Weighting 5%) Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, supervisors, and other stakeholders, to ensure effective communication and coordination in executing welding-related tasks.

  • Act as a liaison between different departments to facilitate smooth workflow and resolve technical issues.

    Training & Mentorship

  • Assist in training programs and mentorship initiatives to support the development of less experienced team members.

  • Seek opportunities for continuous improvement in work processes and procedures.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified B-Pressure Welder with relevant certifications (e.g., ABSA certification in Alberta, Canada).

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience working in spooling and/or vessel welding.

  • Extensive experience in B-pressure welding, including welding in high-pressure environments.

  • In-depth knowledge of welding techniques, welding equipment, and relevant welding codes and standards.

  • Strong commitment to safety, including familiarity with safety regulations and protocols.

  • Problem-solving abilities and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical assessment, which will include a practical welding test to evaluate welding skills and abilities. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be required
