About this position:

The Engineer/Analyst will primarily be involved with all aspects of Transmission. This position will be responsible to ensure organizational compliance, facilitate centralized training, process improvement and development, cost management and aspects of project management.

    About this job:

  • All NorthWestern Energy employees are required to adhere to company safety standards and the Code of Business Conduct & Ethics.

  • All Grid Operations Staff are required to understand and comply with applicable FERC, NERC, and WECC standards, including Standards of Conduct, Reliability, and NERC CIP requirements for Cyber Security of Bulk Electric System Assets.

  • Support real-time electric transmission operations at the Control Center

  • Maintain and advance technology used by Energy Management System (EMS)

  • Research, specify, and configure hardware and software to improve the EMS system

  • Perform basic maintenance on computer systems associated with EMS

  • Configure, and maintain data communications between the Grid OPS EMS and field equipment

  • Develop, maintain and support data transfer from the EMSs to other applications and systems

  • Configure and maintain control logic and programming for Automatic Generation Control (AGC) signals and Automatic Generation Dispatch Signals (ADS)

  • Computer programming for SCADA applications and custom built software applications

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to comply with applicable WECC/NERC standards including cyber security for EMS environments

  • Develop, revise, and edit data visualization tools including real-time charts and SCADA Displays

  • Respond quickly and professionally to support data requests as required

  • Assist in preparing and implementing budgets

  • Callouts and extended hours maybe required

  • Maintain and use all levels of networked computer technology including domain controllers and fileservers

  • Demonstrate proficiency with the computer hardware and software necessary to conduct daily Grid Operations, specifically real-time SCADA and EMS software and associated supporting software.

  • Maintain positive working relationships with NorthWestern Energy internal departments and with other external entities

  • Job time is primarily spent in an office and control center environment, mostly sitting or standing, using a computer terminal and phones with frequent required walking.

    Engineering Position will also include the following duties:

  • Maintain and design Supervisory Controls And Data Acquisition (SCADA) modeling, displays, and point databases used by EMS

  • Design and implement AGC logic and EMS Calculations to support real-time operations and meet NERC Standard Requirements

  • Contribute to solutions that meet technical requirements, applicable codes, and regulatory requirements and follow sound engineering practices

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science. Programming experience highly desired

  • Experience troubleshooting and programming SCADA applications highly desired.

  • Must be able to quickly learn to use specialized computer applications.

  • Must be very proficient with computers and related equipment.

  • Good organizational and technical skills are necessary.

  • Ability to plan and prioritize numerous responsibilities.

  • Must be a highly motivated, self-starter with good analytical, interpersonal, and team skills.

  • Must be able to handle high-stress situations and make decisions quickly and accurately.

  • Must have very good attention to detail and be able to consolidate information and ideas.

  • Must work effectively with minimal supervision.
