Fairview Health Services RN Med/Surg 2 Observation Unit in Burnsville, Minnesota


The Outpatient Observation Unit RN at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, MN cares for adult patients with a wide range of medical and surgical needs. The unit is protocol driven serving medical and post-procedural/post-surgical patients including but not limited to conditions such as chest pain, syncope, renal colic, toxicology exposure, vertigo, DVT, stroke, gastroenteritis, hysterectomy, TURP, mastectomy and heart catheterizations. This 28 bed unit is fast-paced with an average length of patient stay around 28 hours, accommodating Outpatient Observation, Inpatient and Outpatient Surgical patients and is equipped with remote telemetry to closely monitor cardiac patients. The unit is continuously focused on evaluating processes to improve quality of care, decrease length of stay by facilitating quick discharges and efficient patient flow.

This position is 60 hours in two weeks or .75 FTE, benefit eligible. 12 hr night shifts and every other weekend

  • Position reports to Nurse Manager

  • The unit is managed by an Advanced Practice Provider and Physician team. Nursing care team includes RN and NA/NST on all shifts.

  • Nurse to patient ratios on the day and evening shifts are 4:1, on the night shift is 6:1

Responsibilities/Job Description

The registered nurse is responsible for providing patient and family centered nursing care following established standards and practices. The nurse will have an essential role in coordinating care with physicians, care coordinators, patients, and families. The unit is focused on continuously improving processes to improve care and patient flow.


Required Qualifications:

  • MN RN licensure in good standing

  • BLS for health care providers

  • Must have some experience working as RN

  • Willing to consider new grads

  • Training in arrhythmia monitoring and basic EKGinterpretationis required or need to train and pass upon hire

  • Excellent critical thinking skills

  • Strong communication skills both in person and via phone/emails

  • Comfortable using computers

  • Must be able to work in a team environment and delegate

Preferred qualifications:

  • BSN or willingness to obtain in near future

  • RN work experience in an acute or sub-acute setting

  • Experience working in an outpatient setting or ER/Tele or PACU

  • Experience working in a team and delegating

  • Experience working in a support role (if no experience as an RN) NA, PCA, NST or similar

  • Familiarity with EPIC

Vaccination Update
