Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. Quality Engineer in Burns Harbor, Indiana

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Quality Engineer at our Burns Harbor location.  The Quality Engineer is responsible for supporting the daily quality activities including review of heat and slab production, grading of non-conforming material, maintaining high inventory velocity, steelmaking and casting process design . Longer time -framed analyses and reporting of performance data to management to identify waste/non-conforming material and/or solutions . The ideal candidate must strive to improve quality system compliance, reduction of waste/non-conforming material, and metallurgical product improvement to make the highest quality steel . In addition to metallurgical knowledg e, statistical troubling shooting skills, be self-motivated, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment with complex operations.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Comply with safety, quality, and environmental standards.

  • As part of the Quality Team , work closely with operations, engineering, maintenance, and other technical resources to drive results and improvement in the quality metrics.

  • Possess the ability to work effectively within a team environment, utilizing clear and effective communication skills.

  • Communicate with downstream production areas to determine applicability of off chemistry heats and assigns appropriate steel grade .

  • Analyze casting process outputs for proper grading of casting events.

  • Identify , verify, and disposition transition slabs between different grades and caster stoppages.

  • Evaluate held slabs and move them to the proper next process step.

  • Prepare and present daily, weekly, and monthly Steel Producing performance metrics for facility management .

  • Develop protocols for slab s being transferred to other plants.

  • Update existing and write new Quality Assurance S tandard P rocedure D ocuments (SPDs).

  • Review steelmaking processes to determine source cause of Downstream quality concerns .

  • Maintain and update the Slab Quality Model to assure slabs are properly graded based on casting events.

  • Enter and assign Quality process parameters in the Slab Quality Model for new grades .

  • Evaluation of surface and internal quality on trials run by operations or Operating Technology .

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, or Chemi cal engineering.

  • Kn owledge of steel defect origins and metallurgical principles in steelmaking, plate, hot rolling, and finishing.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and SQL.

  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to operate effectively within a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • Some knowledge of steelmaking steps and routings.

  • Demonstrated success in defining and resolving problems.

  • Strong analytical skills.
