Mechanical Engineer (HVAC & Building Services)

At TWD, we are leaders in the design of mechanical and electrical systems for data centres, commercial buildings, educational, institutional, residential and industrial building projects and fleet maintenance facilities. We work with Owners, Developers, Architects, Contractors, Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments, Property Managers, and other consultants design team members to provide Consulting Engineering Services for both new and existing buildings. TWD is currently seeking Mechanical Engineer (HVAC & Building Services) long term contract position in our Burlington, ON office.

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer (HVAC & Building Services) is responsible for managing all aspects of mechanical design for assigned projects.   In addition, as the project manager for assigned projects, this role is the main point of contact with primary responsibility and decision-making authority for planning, implementing, control/monitoring and closure of each project. E fficient delivery of project deliverables, effective quality control, clear communication of expectations to stakeholders and upward reporting are critical tasks that must be performed throughout each project's lifecycle.  

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of mechanical design activities for assigned projects

  • Remain current on systems, technologies and product lines

  • Review and understand the required scope of works as per the RFP and the Proposal documents

  • Understand budgets for project to design within

  • Acquire record drawings in electronic format, if project is for an existing building

  • Provide brief design outline report to client of intended systems and services scope, if not specified in the proposal.

  • Provide Schematic Designs and Details for several types of systems within all the disciplines noted above.

  • Determine standards or codes that must be adhered to (example: ASHRAE, CSA, health care standards / codes etc.)

  • Complete calculations and preliminary equipment selections, familiarity with Trace 3D plus load calculation software.

  • Prepare detailed designs for several types of systems within all the disciplines noted above and able to markup drawings providing clear directions to other team members on the same.

  • Conduct job showing to bidders, answer bidder queries and issue addendums, if required

  • Contract Admin services including Progress claim reviews, issuance of Addenda, CO’s and RFI’s

  • Experience and confident to liaison directly with clients/owners to develop project needs from initial concepts through to implementation and dealing with contractors to provide complete systems integration/commission to the successful satisfaction of the client.

  • Prepare and /or interpret design criteria and scope.

  • Prepare P&ID and flow sheet diagrams, schematics and balances.

  • Be proficient in Industrial and Building HVAC and air movement systems, as well, building utilities design such as Steam and Condensate, Hot Water, chilled water and cooling tower systems and associated piping distribution networks, Pump design and selection, Fire Suppression Systems, Storm and Sanitary piping designs, Compressed Air, and other speciality process piping network designs.

  • Specify and select equipment and systems for purchase.

  • Prepare cost estimates for engineering work and/or capital expenditures.

  • Organize, plan, schedule, and budget engineering, drafting, and design work. Assume responsibility for engineering, design and drafting work with assigned areas.

  • Prepare design and construction standards and contract specifications, scope documents, and special details.

  • Layout and arrange plant, equipment, systems, instruments and controls, structures, and utilities.

  • Perform calculations and conduct analyses and studies as necessary to complete design work.

  • Check drawing for accuracy and overall quality.

  • Document the engineering and design work.

  • Write technical reports.

  • Review and comment on Equipment Shop Drawings, Record Drawings, O&M Manuals, Balance and Commissioning Reports provide by contractor.

  • Issues closeout form identifying agreed date of commencement of contractor’s warranties, at point of substantial completion of the project.

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of experience in HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and/or DDC controls

  • Professional Engineer or Professional Engineer Limited License with PEO, APEGA and/or EGBC, as applicable.

  • Knowledge in governing applicable codes and regulations pertaining to required systems experience noted above.

  • Demonstrated experience managing projects from implementation to closure in HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and/or DDC controls

  • Knowledge and/or experience on LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) projects.

  • Knowledge of financial, contractual and other administrative procedures, and knowledge of related fields of engineering.

  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a range of personalities to establish effective working relationships with the required stakeholders
