The Walt Disney Company Production Tax Supervisor in Burbank, California

About the Role & Team:

The Production Tax Counsel Team is a practice group within the tax department that provides production tax support to Disney’s worldwide content production banners including Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Hulu, Pixar, ABC Signature Studios, 20th Television, 20th Century Studios and others. The Production Tax Counsel Team advises on all aspects of film production including legal entity structures, front and behind camera talent, and tax consequences of production activities including support/advice to our production tax incentive team. The Production Tax Counsel Team also provides tax planning support to the Entertainment Segment and on tax compliance matters.

The Production Tax Supervisor is responsible for supporting the Production Tax Counsel and enterprise-wide content production in day-to-day operations. This position plays a key role in providing tax advice to the business areas involved in content production activities for purposes of tax incentive qualification and mitigation of tax risks consistent with our brand and risk profile. Our productions occur across the globe and this role supports domestic production and INTL production.

What You Will Do:

  • Plan and implement legal arrangements, legal entity relationships, and day-to-day tax support for the Entertainment Segment in the production of motion pictures and episodic programs

  • Provide guidance to the Entertainment Segment and Tax on:

  • behind camera and front of camera talent-related tax matters in multiple jurisdictions,

  • tax considerations of contingent compensation, loan out companies, independent contractors, and employees,

  • structure of legal entity transactions and production activities by legal entities to proactively plan for relevant production incentives and applicable threshold for permanent establishment across multiple jurisdictions, and

  • cross-border crew/workforce related items and production-related issues (direct tax, withholding tax, indirect tax, relevant treaty analysis, and other tax considerations including impact of union/guild rules)

  • Legal research, analysis, and memo writing on technical tax matters (e.g., bonus depreciation, income forecast method, compensation arrangements, taxable versus nontaxable legal entity liquidations, consolidated returns, and tax accounting methods)

  • Provide support to the Production Tax Counsel on material transactions, tax compliance methodologies, and proactive planning (U.S., state and local and INTL with local tax desks)

  • Preparation of legal agreements for intercompany activities where necessary to qualify for production incentives or to mitigate tax risks

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • At least 3-4 years of work experience in an accounting or tax department at a corporation or equivalent experience at a Big 4 accounting firm or similar

  • Film or TV production budgeting and accounting experience

  • Substantive U.S. federal income tax experience (research, writing, and compliance)

  • Quantitative modeling and PowerPoint experience

  • Income tax accounting familiarity and awareness on material considerations including outside of uncertain tax positions

  • Project management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master in Tax and/or Accounting, or LL.M. in tax

  • Public accounting tax experience involving the entertainment industry

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Accounting, Business, Finance, or other similar field, and/or Law degree and admission to a state bar (with membership in good standing)
