Brief Job Description

Buffalo State University is searching for an individual to serve as the Horace Mann Endowed Chair in Exceptional Education. We are seeking an individual with a distinguished career in special education to provide innovative leadership for departmental programs, faculty, and teacher candidates; conduct innovative research; and foster collaborative partnerships with schools and agencies. The successful candidate will exemplify Buffalo State’s commitment to excellence in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service as they seek to advance the mission of the department and the field of special education.

An endowed chair is a significant academic honor. The successful appointee will demonstrate the following:

  • Be a scholar-educator of national or international stature.

  • Possess a distinguished record of accomplishments in the field of special education as evidenced by research, publication, external funding, creative endeavors, awards, honors, and professional leadership.

  • Be an excellent teacher who exhibits generosity of spirit in working with teacher candidates and colleagues.

  • Serve as a model of professional accomplishment and commitment to the mission of Exceptional Education Department, School of Education, and Buffalo State University.

Relationships

The Horace Mann Endowed Chair in Exceptional Education will:

  • Maintain a primary relationship with the Exceptional Education Department, situated in the School of Education, and collaborative relationships with other departments involved in teacher preparation at the university.

  • Connect to the priorities of the campus and the educational community of the region.

  • Participate in, and build upon, the partnerships established through Buffalo State’s nationally recognized Professional Development Schools Consortium.

  • Work closely with faculty, staff, teacher candidates, and the community, with an opportunity to have a significant impact on the field of special education.

Responsibilities

The Horace Mann Endowed Chair in Exceptional Education will:

  • Leverage their expertise, as well as the relationships and resources associated with their role, to support the mission and vision of the Exceptional Education Department and School of Education at Buffalo State.

  • Teach at least one graduate or undergraduate course per semester in the Exceptional Education Department.

  • Model exemplary teaching.

  • Build upon existing lines of research and develop new collaborative research opportunities with faculty, teacher candidates, and school partners.

  • Present at public forums, including local, state, and national conferences, and professional development engagements.

  • Develop scholarly publications.

  • Pursue external funding opportunities to support the work of the Exceptional Education Department and the School of Education.

  • Explore the development of a personnel preparation program in special education.

  • Provide leadership to the biannual Horace Mann Graduate Research Symposium.

  • Participate in department committee work addressing curriculum development, assessment practices, and other initiatives associated with delivering high-quality teacher preparation programs.

  • Facilitate school-based staff development and serve as a resource in our partner schools to promote excellence in teaching practice for mentor teachers hosting our teacher candidates.

  • Participate in the Exceptional Education Advisory Council.

  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to monitor and influence policies associated with special education on local, state, national and international levels.

  • Participate in recruitment efforts of teacher candidates, particularly those who will diversify the special education workforce.

  • Mentor and support early career faculty.

  • Submit an annual report related to the position.

Funding Support

The Horace Mann Endowed Chair in Exceptional Education will:

  • Have access to endowment funds to support research, manuscript preparation, graduate research assistance, library and equipment acquisitions, travel, and other requirements of an active scholar and teacher.

  • Have the opportunity to allocate funds to support the work of the Exceptional Education Department, School of Education, and Buffalo State University.

    Required Qualifications

  • Hold a terminal PhD or EdD in special education or a related field with a research emphasis in special education.

  • Provide evidence of national or international prominence and leadership in the field of special education. This can be reflected by leadership positions, practice innovations, publications, grants, awards, and other contributions to the knowledge and practice of special education.

  • Currently hold the rank of full professor or associate professor with credentials sufficient to merit the rank of full professor at Buffalo State University.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Provide evidence of knowledge and experience with working with teacher candidates and P-12 students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

  • Demonstrate a history of obtaining external funding.

  • Demonstrate a history of teaching or leadership within a personnel preparation program.

  • Hold credentials in one or more of the following areas: BCBA , bilingual education, or TESOL .

  • Have a record of leading collaborative research on evidence-based practices in P-12 schools, with a focus on single-subject research design.
