WORK OBJECTIVE: This job involves work performed in the bus garages. To be an eligible candidate for the position, persons will be required to pass the Advanced Comprehensive Skills Test in the following Garage Mechanic areas: Measurement & Hand Tools, General Mechanical, Power Transmissions/Gear Trains, Fluid Power/Hydraulics, Compressors (Air & AC) and Heat Exchangers, Vehicle Components, Vehicle Engines, Basic Electrical, Burning, Cutting & Welding.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Inspection of vehicles, discovery and diagnosis of defects and unsafe conditions of buses, and of planning and performing repairs, additions, replacements and adjustments with a minimum of supervision. Exercises sound judgment of assigned duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: 1. Must possess all qualifications required to work in subordinate classifications and perform all duties with a speed and accuracy satisfactory to supervisory authorities. 2. Must develop knowledge of company policies pertaining to the work involved Must be able to wear and utilize all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Must explain and demonstrate to others all job details, methods and procedures when directed to do so by the Supervisor or his deputies. 3. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing 4. Must be able to maintain effective working relationships Must be able to obtain certification under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) MVAC 609 certification for refrigerants 5. Must be able to operate and be certified to operate a PIV (powered industrial vehicle/fork truck) 6. Possess the ability to operate safely and effectively common equipment for the position, to include but not limited to, Pallet jacks, Plows trucks, Buses etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of bending, squatting, reaching, kneeling, climbing (ladders), twisting, rotating and/or crawling (under bus). 2. May also involve lifting (10-80+ pounds), carrying (10-60 pounds), pushing and/or pulling (5-15 pounds) materials and/or equipment. 3. Job involves standing one hour at a time for four hours per day, sitting for two hours per day and walking one hour at a time for two hours per day.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: 85% of time is spent inside, 15% of time is spent outside, exposing employee to natural environmental conditions. Work exposes employees to fumes, dust, gases, odors and mist. Employee is also exposed to noise, vibration, hazards (slip and fall, chemicals) and motorized vehicles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Applicant must possess a New York State Commercial Driver’s License or Permit, Class B minimum, with passenger, airbrake and towing endorsements. 3. IN ACCORDANCE WITH FEDERAL REGULATION 49 CFR PARTS 653 & 654, THIS IS A “SAFETY SENSITIVE” POSITION, SUBJECT TO DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING. PARTICIPATION IN THE BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN PROGRAM IS REQUIRED.
