Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Counsel Scholars with personal and psychological issues that affect their performance, behavior, and socialization in school;

  • Prepares scholars for the transition to the next level: high school and post high school activities/options;

  • Plans and coordinates programs such as career and high school fairs, test skills preparation, improved attendance celebrations and other extensions of the counseling program to support students' knowledge of post-secondary options;

  • Assist students in navigating scholar academic, workplace and community experiences, through the use of individual student planning which includes individual graduation portfolios, student interviews and other planning tools;

  • Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with next step educational and career planning;

  • Participates in school committees in order to advocate for students needs and provide guidance for school staff;

  • Provide counseling sessions, treatment plans, or workshops as necessary and establishing prevention programs and intervention plans;

  • Communicate with Scholars to determine the areas in which they may need assistance or counseling;

  • Assist teachers and administrators with behavioral and attitude issues by communicating with Scholars to find the causes of their distress;

  • Provide information, when appropriate, to outside support services to help Scholars with economic, emotional, or physical issues;

  • Assist at-risk Scholars or Scholars with disabilities;

  • Communicate with parents, teachers, and administrators to understand Scholars' challenges;

  • Maintain case files and reports to track Scholars ' progress and problems;

  • Help Scholars and families suffering from abuse, violence, hunger, or homelessness to access resources like shelters, food banks, and medical care;

  • Review Scholar records to identify previous barriers and/or interventions;

  • Conduct parent interviews to acquire socio-developmental information as needed for special education referral;

  • Attend and participate in Manifestation meetings;

  • Interview Scholars and parents to discuss issues related to non-attendance and develop a plan of action with attendance committee;

  • Attend Scholars support team meetings and court intervention;

  • Provide individual and/or group counseling in response to school-wide crises;

  • Conduct home visits as a method to access the family and conduct interviews in response to school referrals;

  • When necessary pick up and drop off Scholars to and from their homes;

  • Maintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs; refers parents and Scholars to agencies when appropriate;

  • Perform related work as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications/Education and/or Experience

It's not required but is preferred that teachers hold a NYS professional teaching certificate in their subject area or be eligible for reciprocity to include (1) Minimum Bachelor's degree in subject area to be taught, Master's Degree preferred; (2) Proven track-record of high achievement in the classroom and commitment to accountability preferred ; (3) Belief in and alignment with REACH Academy Charter School core beliefs and educational philosophy; (4) Valid New York State Certification, except in cases where the Head of School shall make an exception under the terms of this Policy, in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Salary - REACH Academy Charter School has a salary scale in place. Your salary step will depend on your prior years of experience and certification. A first-year teacher with no experience but has their certification will start at $45,000. A teacher on step 10 which is the most prior credit we can give is $65,830. Uncertified teaches begin at $40,000.
