CITY OF BROWNWOOD

Job Assignment: LANDFILL OPERATOR II Job Number: 12-1202 Department: 12-Landfill Pay: $3,145.00 per month / $18.14 per hour Immediate Supervisor: Operator IV

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time position. Stop vehicles at Citizen Convenience Center entrance, collect fees, perform necessary clerical work to provide reports as directed on a timely basis. Directs vehicles to proper unloading areas requiring persons to segregate waste and recyclables accordingly. May operate a roll off truck to remove containerized waste as necessary. May operate other types of heavy equipment in the landfill such as a dump truck, water truck, dozer, compactor, etc. as needed. Keeps recycling center neat and clean. Performs maintenance on equipment as required. Must be willing to adopt and exhibit the City of Brownwood I SERVE Core Values.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED:

  • Collect fees as necessary.
  • Direct each vehicle to an unloading area.
  • Control recycling of automotive waste (oil and filters), glasses, papers, plastics, brush, white goods etc.
  • Extinguish any fires that may occur at the recycling center area.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations.
  • Perform manual labor as needed, to include use of hand and power tools.
  • Remove or coordinate the removal of containerized waste.
  • Assist customers with placement of recyclables and waste into proper containers or areas.
  • Recover refrigerants from white goods in accordance with EPA and TCEQ regulations.
  • Must be able to operate all equipment at the recycle center and landfill to include skid steer loader, bailer, glass crusher, backhoe, roll off truck, dozer, compactor, dump truck as needed.
  • Spread and/or compact refuse with compactor.
  • Cover portions of the cell as necessary with daily or intermediate cover using haul truck.
  • Use dozer to rip rock, clear vegetation, and spread wood chips within landfill.
  • All other duties as assigned by supervisor.

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Indirectly - as assigned

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Outdoors mostly, with adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to transport self from site to site.
  • Will work in extreme temperatures, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing and lifting to perform duties of the job.
  • Employee will work with chemicals, mechanical, electrical and traffic hazards.
  • Employee will work in confined spaces, where extreme hazards exist while performing duties.
  • Employee is frequently required to perform lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, noises, fumes, odors, water and mud.
  • Employee must be able to walk on slippery, loose, uneven and sloped surfaces.
  • Hazards exposed to are heavy equipment, recycling equipment, fires, household hazardous waste, putrescible waste, automotive waste and private vehicular traffic, possible exposure to refrigerants.

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS: Heavy contact in dealing with the public and other employees daily.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
  • Ability to read and write and follow verbal and written instructions.
