Pratt L153 Shop Technician Grade 103 (71104) in Brooklyn, New York

Under the general supervision of the Fine Arts Graduate Program’s Dock 72 Facility Manager, the Shop Technician will support the day-to-day operation of the Graduate Program’s Dock 72 shops. They will join a team committed to fostering a safe, innovative, and robust creative culture that provides graduate students with practical technical support to guide their practice in and beyond their time at Pratt.

Operations and Maintenance:

  • Oversee the safe operation, set-up, inspection, and maintenance of equipment and tools, performing troubleshooting relating to the repair and installation of shop equipment and technologies.

  • Oversee inventory, secure price quotes, and order supplies as needed.

  • Hire, train, and supervise student employees in safely handling and basic operation of shop equipment and tools.

  • Where applicable, coordinate the equipment, labs, and shops' check-in/check-out and reservation process.

  • Partner with the facilities department as needed to ensure the shop's proper functioning, coordinating as necessary to troubleshoot plumbing, electrical issues, hazardous waste pick-up, heat regulation, and other maintenance issues.

  • Support the continuous improvement of resources and facilities by making recommendations and performing research.

Supervision, Training and Education:

  • Supervise daily student and faculty work in the shop and its related satellite resources, providing technical guidance and support for faculty teaching in the shop.

  • Collaborate with the Dock 72 Facility Manager developing and implementing training materials, procedures, policies, and services for student employees, student users, and staff and faculty working in the shop.

  • Implement a pedagogy for shop safety orientation.

  • Where applicable, conduct 10 shop safety orientations annually.

  • For technical instruction beyond the scope of standard technical guidance (i.e., providing a 1-hour or less demo alongside a faculty member), workshops for more complex technical training can be requested by academic departments as part of routine curriculum planning.

  • Participation in workshop coordination (i.e., scheduling, preparation, etc.) is obligatory; instruction is voluntary. With no shorter than a month’s advance notice, the (Department Head/Director) can schedule workshops to support curricular goals to be coordinated during class time. Workshops will be compensated as an academic stipend and must occur outside of working hours, not to exceed ten hours per semester.

  • Where applicable, support web content creation, revision, and continuous improvement, providing clear, up-to-date, and user-friendly information regarding lab/shop policies, scheduling, hours, instruction, and programming opportunities.

  • Participate in regular team meetings to support the overall use of facilities and resources.

  • Cultivate a diverse, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

Specific duties for the technician in charge of the wood shop, metal shop, plaster room, spray booth, and general studio-use equipment:

  • Assist Dock 72 Facility Manager with logistics and administration of BNY access and loading dock protocols.

  • Assist Dock 72 Facility Manager with MFA student move-in and move-out.

  • Assist MFA Assistant Chair with tours of Dock 72 for prospective MFA students.

  • Assist Dock 72 Facility Manager with MFA Thesis show, gallery space, and event logistics.

  • Inspect studios, shops, and galleries regularly to ensure code compliance (FDNY and Accessibility.)

  • Implement and monitor storage plan for student in-process artworks and materials.

  • Maintain the condition of the spray booth and plaster shop.

  • Work with the facilities to ensure the spray booth filters are properly maintained.
