Senior Accountant

General Definition/Conditions of Work: The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Finance Director. Performs various functions within the City's Finance department relating to maintaining the City's general ledger accounting system. Includes but not limited to preparing reports, account reconciliations, grant reporting, budget preparation, audit preparation, safeguarding documents, and performing various other tasks as assigned within the department.

This is light work. Work requires stooping, bending, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, and lifting. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains City general ledger accounting system which includes:
    • Preparing and posting journal entries to the various funds.
    • Reconciliation of Treasurer Report and Bank Statements.
    • Reconcile and review balance sheets and financial statements monthly.
    • Generation of financial statements from the accounting system.
  • Assists with the preparation of the fiscal year municipal budget, from developing department workpapers through budget document preparation.
  • Prepare and compile information for the annual financial audit.
  • Prepares various reports for state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Serves as Financial Grant Administrator.
  • Assists with the assembly and completion of financial data.
  • Produces monthly and annual financial reports for respective departments and constitutional offices.
  • Performs detail analysis for various departments within the organization.
  • Prepares and files 1099s.
  • Compiles and maintains the City Fixed Assets Listing.
  • Reconciles and prepares information for the Community Development Block Grant Funds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Possess background in accounting principles and application.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Possess above average spreadsheet and data base skills.
  • Possess strong planning, organization, analytical and team skills.
  • Proficiency in personal PC and mainframe applications.
  • Ability to interface with various departments within the City.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a Bachelor's degree in business with a concentration in accounting required.
  • Two years' related experience preferred.

Licenses/Certificates or Other Requirements: Valid Driver's License
