Equipment Operator II - Utilities

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Operates heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of water and sewer utilities.
  • Installs and maintains water and sewer lines, services, valves, fire hydrants, water meters and other system components.
  • Primarily operates heavy equipment, such as rubber-tired backhoe/loaders. May also operate track excavators, air compressors, jackhammers, sewer vacuum and flushing equipment, sewer inspection and video equipment, boring machines, dump trucks, trenchers, tractors and other equipment.
  • May handle, load, wire and detonate explosives.
  • May locate and mark underground utilities, valves, and manholes.
  • Works overtime as required and serves on 24-hour on-call rotation.
  • May perform all tasks required by Maintenance Worker I and II positions. Performs other related duties as required.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school or equivalent diploma required, with a minimum of one (1) year of heavy equipment operating experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.
  • Must possess Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with air-brakes endorsement.
  • May be required to obtain or possess blasting certification and CDL Tanker endorsement.
  • Ability to utilize descriptive data and information, such as regulations, blueprints, correspondence and general operating manuals.
  • Ability to exert heavy physical stress in heavy work in outdoor utility maintenance and heavy construction environment.
