Central Kitsap School District Certified Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant in Bremerton, Washington

Interested candidates must complete a Central Kitsap School District application to be considered for this position.  Position Description:

This position conducts speech/language therapy services with students under the direction of a certificated speech/language therapist and travels between assigned elementary or secondary schools as necessary. 

* Minimum Qualifications:*

  1. A Bachelor's degree in the field of Communication Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology or an Associate's Degree from an approved two-year school with SLPA certification. 

  2. Obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's License is required.

  3. Demonstrated knowledge of skills and experience in the following areas:

    • Working with students with communication, learning, behavioral and/or physical handicaps.
    • Understanding of phonics and ability to learn word attack skills.
    • Adaptive communication technology, and/or speech and language development desirable.
    • Keyboarding at 40 wpm is desirable.
    • Use of correct grammar and English usage.
  4. Demonstrated ability to:

    • Manage and lead students through prescribed speech activities.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and parents. 
    • Operate general office equipment.
    • Organize materials; follow directions.
    • Schedule activities and attend to detail; be creative, resourceful and flexible.
    • Articulate clearly. 
    • Maintain confidentiality.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multicultural and diverse socio-economic setting.

``` 6. All Assistants will have to complete the State required trainings within the Paraeducator Board designated timelines. Central Kitsap School District will provide the guidelines and determine the trainings required for the Fundamental Course of Study Certificate.  This qualification begins after officially hired.

Performance Responsibilities:  

The Certified SLPA for Special Education students perform any or all of the following duties, depending upon current assignment:

Implement therapeutic programs and treatments within the instruction and guidelines established by the supervising SLP.  Lead students in articulation drills; lead higher-risk students in Language activities; give assistance to students with medical and handicapping conditions.

Provide general therapy assistance; model correct tongue and mouth position; model correct sound; model correct language skills.

Work with students in group settings, act as a model and assist student to maintain good behavior; reinforce proper behavior; listen to student to assist therapist; operate audiometer to administer hearing screenings at request of therapist.

Accompany individuals or small groups of speech/language, special education/regular education students throughout school premises; communicate with regular education or special education teachers for maintaining good communication with the speech department.

Maintain written records/documentation according to state and federal guidelines; prepare progress reports; collect necessary data; complete documentation for Medicaid billing. 

Assist each therapist in planning and adapting materials and activities as directed.  Administer standardized tests as a guide to Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals for individual students or to qualify student for program.  Give group tests to regular/special education classrooms for screening purposes. 

Assign and correct individual special education/regular education student speech assignments.  Chart student data; maintain individual data sheets.
