General Statement

The Department of Civil Engineering (CE) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in water resources engineering/fluid mechanics at the rank of Assistant Professor. The CE Department offers BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and a BS degree in Construction Engineering Technology. The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering ( NACOE ) offers a PhD degree in engineering with a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Applied Mechanics option.

Approximately 700 students are enrolled in these programs supported by over 20 full time faculty. Research opportunities within the Department are enhanced by close association with the Subzero Research Laboratory ( SRL ) that focuses on ice/snow science, the Center for Biofilm Engineering ( CBE ), the Western Transportation Institute ( WTI ), the Energy Research Institute ( ERI ) and the Montana Engineering Education Research Center ( MEERC ). The Department also provides hands-on experience for students through a variety of community-based projects.

Full-time tenure track appointments in the Department of Civil Engineering will have primary responsibilities in teaching, research, and service. Successful candidates will become an integral member of the Department, with duties to include teaching courses in the curriculum, contributing to program and curriculum development, developing a nationally recognized research program with extramural funding, and participating in professional/service activities. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to CE undergraduate and graduate instruction, mentoring, and advising.

  • PhD in Civil Engineering or related engineering field;

The Program

Founded in 1893 as a Land Grant University, Montana State University ( MSU ) is composed of eight academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. MSU is designated as a Carnegie Foundation R1 university for its research activity and is one of only two universities with an extremely high undergraduate enrollment profile to achieve this designation.

Bozeman is an extended community of about 75,000 nestled in the Rocky Mountains in southwest Montana. In addition to providing access to an extraordinary ecosystem for teaching and research programs, Bozeman is renowned for year-round recreational and cultural opportunities including access to world class ski areas, three blue-ribbon trout rivers and the Gallatin National Forest. The city boasts high quality medical facilities, a low crime rate, many fine restaurants, acclaimed public and private schools, a symphony orchestra and choir, an annual opera, and nationally known cultural and recreational events. The Department

The CE Department has 17 tenured or tenure-track faculty and offers ABET -accredited baccalaureate programs in both civil engineering and construction engineering technology, and graduate programs at the Master’s and PhD levels. The Department has approximately 660 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students. The Department is responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering mechanics for the College of Engineering ( COE ). Research opportunities within the Department are enhanced by ties with the Western Transportation Institute ( WTI ) and the Center for Biofilm Engineering ( CBE ), as well the resources available in the Subzero Laboratory Facility ( SRL ), all of which are part of the College of Engineering ( COE ).

The College

The College of Engineering comprises five academic departments – Chemical & Biological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, and is home to the Center for Biofilm Engineering ( CBE ), Montana Engineering Education Research Center ( MEERC ), Western Transportation Institute ( WTI ), Montana Microfabrication Facility ( MMF ), Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center ( MMEC ), and Army and Air Force ROTC Units. The College offers a full suite of Master’s degrees; a Ph.D. in Engineering with options in the fields of Applied Mechanics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering; and a Ph.D. in Computer Science.

With a wide array of research programs in progress, MSU engineering faculty and students have received an impressive number of awards. In the last three years alone, MSU engineering students have received two Rhodes Scholarships, a Marshall Fellowship, a Gates-Cambridge Fellowship, as well as four Goldwater scholarships. The Norm Asbjornson Innovation Center ( NAIC ) was completed in Fall 2018 and this innovative facility will transform engineering education and scholarly activity at MSU .
