Wood County Hospital Respiratory Care Student-Limited Permit in Bowling Green, Ohio

The Certified Student Respiratory Therapist with a limited permit granted by the Ohio Medical Board a ssumes responsibility for performing respiratory care to patient populations demonstrating abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system under the supervision/direction of a Registered Respiratory Therapist and after completion of didactic coursework, passing proficiency testing and orientation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs procedures verified by their Verification of Work Form from their accredited respiratory care program and must pass skills and competency for those procedures  approved.

  • Provides cardiopulmonary care services under supervision/direction of a Registered Respiratory Therapist and in accordance with physician’s orders, department policies and  procedures.

  • Reviews patient medical record for history, current respiratory care orders and other patient data, (i.e. PFT’s, X-rays, blood gases, etc.) to ensure appropriate planning and administration of ordered therapy.

  • Performs respiratory therapy assessments with the guidance of a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

  • Provides basic and intermediate respiratory therapy modalities to all patient populations, i.e. medicated aerosol/inhaler delivery, airway clearance therapy, oxygen and humidity therapy, Incentive spirometry, noninvasive monitors, noninvasive ventilation, blood gas sampling and analysis, patient monitoring, etc.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of the patients  served.

  • Monitors, records responses to therapy and communicates/documents patient condition as  appropriate.

  • Sets up, calibrates, and troubleshoots patient care  equipment.

  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

  • Cleans patient care equipment per infection prevention  protocols.

  • Responds appropriately to all codes and traumas. Performs tasks within scope of  practice.

  • Attends staff  meetings.

  • Attends in-service education lectures, programs, seminars and other educational opportunities.

  • Performs order entry and billing of services on the hospital electronic medical record computer system.

  •  Assists in arrangements for home care patients to include patient/parent teaching, review of equipment, and cleaning techniques.

  • Accesses medication from automatic dispensing cabinet system to retrieve medications they are authorized to  administrator.

  • Requirements:

  • Actively enrolled and in good standing in an accredited Respiratory Care Program.

  • Possesses a current temporary limited permit to practice Respiratory Care (RCLP-L1) in the State of Ohio.

  • Educational verification from the college or university affirming clinical exposure.

  • Completion of fall semester of junior year of an AMA and COARC approved program. Upon graduation from an AMA or COARC approved program, the candidate has 90-days to obtain the RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) credential in order to maintain employment.

  • Working towards obtaining a Current State Respiratory Therapist Licensure.

  • Prior experience in basic/intermediate respiratory care and procedures preferred.

  • Neonatal/pediatric experience preferred when appropriate for site.

  • Certification in Basic Life Support by American Heart Association or American Red Cross required. ACLS, PALS, NRP certification preferred or obtained within 3 months of  hire.

Rotation: weekend shift and on-call rotation required
