Purpose of Position
Under general supervision of the Manager of Maintenance Services, the GIS Technician position performs skilled work in the area of campus locates, GIS monitoring, building manual creation/updating, as-built drawing oversight, preventative maintenance scheduling and maintaining, and all related data entry. These duties are performed as needed on the shift required to include 1st shift, 2nd shift, and/or a modified flexible shift.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.
Design or prepare graphic representations of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data, using GIS hardware or software applications
Mark/ locate all underground utilities when requested for WKU Digs on campus, including south campus, the farm, and the south street facilities
Assist PDC and DFM to monitor, and maintain the GIS system, to include accessing/printing the mapping system as needed
Create, and update all building manuals, in an electronic environment
Monitor, and secure all university owned as-built drawings for present use and historical archiving
Create and maintain an electronic storage system of all as-built and related maintenance documents
Assist in editing and maintaining the preventative maintenance data system by reviewing existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documentation
Analyze Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data to identify spatial relationships or display results of analyses, using maps, graphs, or tabular data
Promotes safe work practices within team and across campus
Operates University vehicles
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains excellent communication/customer service with Building Coordinators and all other DFM team members
Communicates bi-laterally with other area maintenance, central trades groups, as well as other DFM team members to coordinate work activities between groups
Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills Essential for Success
Knowledge of Global Positioning System (GPS) Devices and tools
Knowledge of principles and methods for describing the features of land, sea, and air masses, including their physical characteristics, locations and interrelationships
Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
Skill to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
Skill to identifying complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events)
Ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations)
Ability to provide on-the-job training/coaching to other technicians
Basic computer skills to access/send emails and perform data entry into the maintenance work order system
Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
Ability to monitor and assess performance of yourself to make improvements or take corrective action
Ability to talk to others and convey information effectively

Must be familiar with and have experience in the use of radio protocol

Physical Abilities Needed
The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
Ability to bend, crawl, reach, kneel, climb ladders/work aloft and able to navigate tight spaces, as well as working in hot, noisy mechanical rooms
Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor, which includes heavy lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather
Job Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED equivalency
Four years experience conducting geospatial information services to include the marking and mapping of underground utilities.
Working knowledge of ARC-GIS or another GIS System
Working knowledge of GPS based locating systems.
Working knowledge of computer aided design systems.
Valid driver's license
Additional Information:
Salary Range: $19 - $23/hr
