Boston Globe Media Partners State House Reporter in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Description:

The Boston Globe is hiring a State House reporter to join its powerhouse politics team, to cover Beacon Hill and state politics. The so-called “cradle of democracy,” Massachusetts is home to arguably the least transparent Legislature in the country – which means we’re looking for a dogged, enterprising candidate with a passion for challenging the status quo and unearthing accountability stories that those in power work to keep hidden from view.

The Boston Globe’s readers also embrace the sport of politics almost as fervently as they do the Red Sox, and the area produces a steady stream of compelling campaigns that capture national headlines.

The candidate must possess the ability to write accurately on deadline, translating the jargon-dense language of lawmaking, the speechifying of politicos, and the spin of operatives into clear copy that cuts through the noise, and tells the story with enthusiasm, authority and urgency.

The reporter should be indefatigable in creating a roster of sources and calling them, crafting a constant stream of story ideas. The successful candidate should expect to write a mix of newsy scoops, spot news, hard-hitting accountability stories, and ambitious enterprise.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce high-impact journalism, both daily and enterprise, for publication online and in print.

  • Author journalism that offers readers both the analysis and authoritative explanatory take that is the hallmark of Globe journalism.

  • Work with visual and digital specialists to create rich, unforgettable displays, and embrace alternative storytelling formats.

  • Weekend and/or holiday reporting shifts may at times be required.Ex) day to day tasks, team project involvement

    Qualifications:

  • At least 3 to 5 years experience as a journalist at a major publication.

  • An excellent journalist who can write accurately and clearly about complex subject matters on tight deadlines.

  • A vibrant writer who can craft copy with sweep and authority.

  • A fearless reporter who is comfortable taking on powerful institutions and people.

  • A team player who can work in a collaborative setting and thrives on the energy of a group working toward a common goal.

  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

Bonus Points if You… have experience reporting from a State House or on state agencies.

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, out of the Boston Globe's bureau in the Massachusetts State House, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
