Current lab focuses include improving genetic diagnosis for hearing loss using new DNA sequencing technologies as well as modelling human hearing loss using mouse models. This research assistant role focuses on mouse models and in vitro experiments to study hearing loss.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and independent worker. The Translational Hearing Genomics Lab is affiliated with Harvard Medical School and located across the street from Boston Children’s Hospital in the Longwood Medical Area. We are physically located in the Center for Life Sciences and are part of Boston Children’s Department of Otolaryngology & Communication Enhancement hearing research group. This is large and active group with a track record of success in the field.

This Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Mouse models: animal care and breeding, genotyping, measurement of hearing in mice (auditory brainstem response and otoacoustic emissions), measurement of vestibular function in mice, temporal bone dissection and cochlear tissue harvesting

  • Gene therapy for hearing loss in mouse models

  • Microscopy: prepare slides for microscopy, staining, and imaging

  • Analysis: evaluate images, prepare figures

  • Prepare abstracts and manuscripts for submission to medical journals and national conferences.

  • If interested, can shadow PI and other physicians in the clinic and operating room (OR).

  • Perform other miscellaneous administrative duties as assigned or required.

In order to qualify you must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriately related discipline, preferably in a Life, Health, or Social Sciences field

  • Work requires well-developed organizational skills in order to manage multiple projects at various stages of completion.

  • Work requires advanced writing skills for preparing IRB submissions, abstracts, and drafting manuscripts.

  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

  • A two-year commitment to the position is preferred.
