State of Massachusetts Recreation Facilities Supv II - Melnea A. Cass Recreational Complex in Boston, Massachusetts

The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails, golf courses and parkways. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Recreation Facilities Supervisor II at the Melnea A. Cass Recreational Complex, 120 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Roxbury. The Recreation Facilities Supervisor II will assist in the operation of the Melnea A. Cass Recreation Center all year long and assist in the management of the deep-water pool and spray deck from June – August. The Recreation Facilities Supervisor II assists in the management and maintains the recreation facilities; monitors events; inspects buildings and equipment; performs routine maintenance; operates equipment; ensures the proper upkeep of facilities; enforces safety rules; and administers first aid. Duties -Supervises and performs the operation, maintenance and opening and closing of the building and its assets; and ensures proper upkeep and cleanliness of the facility and assets -Supervises the operation of equipment such as pool filtering, chlorinating and acid combatting equipment, and all mechanical systems -Proficient in the operation and maintenance of facility equipment and hand tools required for upkeep of the building and its assets. -Identifies, repairs, or organizes repairs to heating, plumbing, electrical, structural, and mechanical systems, and equipment. -Supervises a staff that operates and maintains the building and assets, assigns work duties, schedules staff, and enforces uniform and conduct requirements. -Enforces safety rules and regulations during events and routine use by the public -Performs regular testing of swimming pool water and makes routine chemical adjustments to ensure compliance with DPH standards for swimming pool water quality -Assists in building, grounds, and asset maintenance including daily pool chemical analysis/testing, capacity closures and reporting, and pool and facility maintenance and cleaning as per DPH and DCR standard operating procedures -Performs other duties such as preparing reports, daily log sheets and checklists (hard copy and/or electronic), correspondence and memos as required -Uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment and follows proper procedures for the handling and/or transport of swimming pool chemicals -Administers First Aid, CPR and emergency messaging if needed -Performs other related work as required Preferred Qualifications: -Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the maintenance of swimming pools -Knowledge of t types and uses of swimming pool apparatus and supplies such as filters, chlorinating materials, and chemicals -Knowledge of the principals, practices, and techniques of supervision -Knowledge of the safety precaution and procedures followed in building maintenance work -Ability to gather information through questioning individuals and by examining records and documents. -Knowledge of basic first aid and emergency life-saving techniques including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the application of tourniquets -Knowledge of and skilled in the uses of handheld power tools such as drills, electric hand saws, and small hand tools such as hammers and wrenches -Knowledge of skilled in operating the types and uses of custodial cleaning supplies and equipment such as buffers and vacuums -Knowledge of the types and uses of grounds keeping supplies and equipment -Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others -Ability to deal tactfully with others -Ability to understand, explain, and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedure governing assigned unit activities. -Ability to give written and oral instruction in a precise, understandable manner -Ability to maintain a calm manner, make decision and act quickly in emergency situations -Ability to follow oral and written instructions -Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work accordance to the nature of the job to be accomplished; the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; \controlling work through periodic reviews and or evaluations; determining subordinates training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively, determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRMENTS -Possession of a valid CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certificate issued by the American Heart Association of America Red Cross; a valid Standard First Aid and Personal Safety Certificate issued by the American Red Cross; and a valid Class D driver’s license. -Certification in a program that meets regulatory requirements for pool supervisors in Massachusetts is required. This includes certification in Practical Pool Management PLUS, Aquatic Facility Operator, Certified Pool Operator, or another equivalent program First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the maintenance and/or repair of recreational facilities or in recreational management or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitution: I. A certificate, diploma or degree as evidence of satisfactory completion of at least a two-year program in a recognized school above the high school level in building construction technology, electrical engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology or mechanism power engineering may be substituted for the required experience.* Education toward such a program will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. Special Requirements: I. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross II.
