Job Overview

The mission of the O’Tierney-Ginn lab is to produce and disseminate knowledge on the interaction between the mother, placenta, and fetus that impacts the long-term health of the baby.

An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is open in our translational laboratory to join an interdisciplinary team, studying mechanisms by which placental microRNA participate in the interplay between placenta and glucose-insulin regulation during pregnancy.

The candidate’s primary focus will be to investigate the endocrine effect of placental miRNA related to maternal insulin sensitivity on peripheral tissues.

The successful candidate must have technical expertise in molecular biology and cell culture. A background in reproductive biology is desirable.

Job Description

  1. Conducts independent research projects within the healthcare field, under the guidance and mentorship of senior researchers.

  2. Designs and implements research studies, including experimental protocols, data collection methods, and statistical analysis plans.

  3. Analyzes and interprets research data, using appropriate statistical techniques and software.

  4. Prepares research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences and scientific meetings.

  5. Collaborates with other researchers and professionals to develop and refine research hypotheses, study designs, and methodologies.

  6. Stays updated with the latest advancements and breakthroughs in healthcare research and apply relevant knowledge to ongoing projects.

  7. Assists in securing research funding by contributing to grant writing and research proposal development.

  8. Collaborates with healthcare professionals and institutions to collect clinical data and samples for research purposes.

  9. Contributes to the development and validation of new diagnostic tools, treatments, and interventions.

  10. Participates in the preparation of research reports, progress updates, and grant applications.

  11. Mentors and provide guidance to undergraduate and graduate students involved in research projects.

  12. Collaborates with industry partners to translate research findings into practical applications and technologies.

  13. Collaborates with regulatory bodies and ethics committees to ensure compliance with research protocols and regulations.

  14. Contributes to the dissemination of research findings to healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public through various channels, such as seminars, workshops, and publications.

  15. Maintains accurate and organized records of research data, protocols, and results, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications :

  1. Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. is required.

  2. Prior experience in healthcare research.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Record of publication in relevant field of study.

Skills & Abilities:

  • High level of motivation

  • Standard molecular genetic and nucleic acid handling techniques, including PCR.

  • Standard molecular biologic techniques, including routine protein work, immunoprecipitation and electrophoresis/ immunoblotting

  • Experience handling fresh tissues and cell cultures for genetic and molecular biologic analysis

  • Familiarity with high-throughput genetic techniques, including expression profiling and tissue micro-array analysis

  • Strong documentation, presentation and writing skills, and will be expected to prepare work for scientific presentation, incorporation into grant applications, and publication.

  • Excellent and meticulous organizational and technical skills are of the utmost importance as are documentation skills, and interpersonal and communication skills

  • Must be able to attend trainings in Biosafety and to rigorously adhere to biosafety standards and sterile techniques at all times.

  • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment

  • Ability to work independently, under supervision and as a part of a team is required.

  • Strong interpersonal relationships with laboratory co-workers and co-investigators at other institutions or in other labs
