Job Description

The Opportunity

The Long Term Care (LTC) and Fixed Products (FP) Data team is responsible for handling the data flow required to support actuarial modeling, reserve valuation, experience analysis and in-force management activities. This individual will work with global IT professionals and John Hancock actuaries to prioritize projects and deliver accurate data on schedule. The main priorities are to deliver accurate and reliable data, shortening the data delivery time, and implementing quality control infrastructure and processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide data support and expertise to actuarial areas, such as researching data quality issues and producing systems analysis, to identify root causes and propose solutions

  • Translate business and user requirements into technical requirements, develop business requirement documents and specifications

  • Succinctly summarize findings from data analysis and effectively connect with partners to design optimal solutions

  • Act as liaison between actuarial areas and IS/IT for the development and implementation of new processes/systems and enhancement of existing processes/systems.

  • Break down and describe business needs into Stories supporting an iterative and incremental delivery model

Requirements:

  • Excellent SQL programming

  • Understanding the principles of ETL (extract, transform, load) programming, and data lineage

  • Knowledge of standard methodologies in data infrastructure and ability to identify, propose and implement process improvements

  • Outstanding problem-solving abilities and desire to take ownership of projects from start to finish

  • Strong oral and written communication; able to effectively articulate technical vision, possibilities, and outcomes

  • Familiarity with the fundamentals of Insurance

Education and Experience:

  • At least 7-10 years of experience in the financial services industry

  • Advanced degree in quantitative field

  • Prior knowledge of Long Term Care or Fixed products / life insurance industry preferred

Skills and Proficiencies:

  • Solid understanding of a data querying language such as SQL, Python, R and/or SAS

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Strong desire to improve processes

  • Ability to communicate effectively with actuaries and IT professionals

  • Outstanding organization and time management skills; ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while demonstrating sound judgment

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Salary range is expected to be between

$86,325.00 USD - $155,385.00 USD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance.
