Amalgamated Bank Commercial Banker, CDFIs/Non-profit Sector in Boston, Massachusetts

Amalgamated Bank, America’s socially responsible bank, seeks a Boston-based Commercial Banker focused on commercial lending that furthers our vision of economic, social, racial, and economic justice. This banker will be responsible for expanding our mission-driven lending to values-aligned institutions in the New England region, including community impact and social advocacy organizations, CDFI’s, nonprofits, foundations, unions, progressive for-profit companies, and renewable energy projects.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Business Development

  • Identify and develop new lending opportunities with values-aligned clients in the New England region, including community impact and social advocacy groups, non-profits, foundations, sustainability organizations, CDFI’s, unions, and for-profit social impact enterprises

  • Meet with client prospects, attend trade/networking functions and industry events aimed at expanding the Bank’s C & I lending portfolio with values-aligned clients in New England region

  • Actively identify opportunities to cross-sell other Bank products and services to clients and prospects including treasury management, deposit and investment services and products

  • Work closely and in coordination with the Bank’s National Director of Community Development Finance to ensure the region’s community needs are being addressed and are in alignment with the Bank’s community development finance national strategy

    Credit Underwriting

  • Work with the credit risk and underwriting teams within the Bank to develop and structure new loans that demonstrate strong credit and risk management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for internal credit presentations and loan reviews

  • Work with legal counsel and underwriting team to facilitate documentation of credit facilities

    Portfolio Management

  • Work with internal commercial banking support functions to effectively on-board new clients

  • Once client portfolio has been developed, maintain frequent contact with clients to ensure that the clients’ lending, treasury management, deposit, and investment management needs are being properly handled

  • Maintain awareness of maturating credits, overdue payments, financial information reporting, etc. which could affect the status of the commercial relationships and take appropriate action

  • Perform other duties as directed

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements:

    Ideal candidate has the following:

  • Proven lender with community finance origination and/or nonprofit lending experience

  • Has built and maintained a portfolio of community-based impact assets with specific emphasis in affordable housing, economic development, and racial & climate justice impact lending

  • Experience with all aspects of the credit process; including credit policy construction, underwriting and portfolio management

  • Community engagement through leadership positions with mission consistent advocacy and non-profit organizations

  • Understanding of the unique needs and characteristics of the non-profit, community development, and CDFI sectors

  • Leadership experience with a values-aligned organization, institution, or group a plus

  • Passion to support socially minded organizations

  • Successful track record in relationship management, coalition building, and partnership execution

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills
