The Cardiac Sonographer II is responsible for the following:

  • Supervises provision of echocardiography examinations within non-invasive lab.

  • Monitors performance and provides assistance to ensure examinations are performed according to established protocols.

  • May be assigned the role of sonographer in-charge for the day, overseeing daily operations.

  • Plans case methodology and conducts comprehensive examinations in laboratory or with portable equipment at other locations as needed.

  • May participate in other imaging modalities.

  • Establishes supportive relationship with patients and families.

  • Identifies patients'/families' specific needs and incorporates into patient care as appropriate.

  • Explains examination procedures to patients/parents and notifies them of scheduling problems or changes

  • Maintains and evaluates lab equipment.

  • Oversees completion of routine preventive maintenance and performs minor repairs as needed

  • Monitors and maintains inventory of standard supplies, initiating reorder of items according to established par levels. Prepares and maintains required logs and records.

  • Performs other related administrative duties as needed

  • Precept new students, new sonographers, fellows, and serves as a resource

  • Provides instruction on performing echocardiography procedures and interpretation of results for sonographers, trainees and fellows.

  • Serves as a resource and responds to requests for information or assistance.

  • Assists in clinical research studies.

  • Explains protocols to staff and oversees collection of required clinical data.

  • Selects examination images for conferences, teaching sessions and publications as needed.

  • Maintains knowledge of current professional trends and practices as well as anatomy, physiology, surgical repair and related subjects through attendance at conferences, reading sessions and other continuing education programs.

The Cardiac Sonographer must have the following:

  • 2 years’ clinical experience in pediatric echocardiography

  • Completion of high school or equivalent education.

  • Completion of an accredited Cardiac Ultrasound program in pediatric echocardiography.

  • Pediatric Echocardiography (RDCS PE) certification

  • A current Basic Life Support certification (BLS) in accordance with American Heart Association standards is required.
