  • Interpreting for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and families and providers, and for patients and families with limited or no spoken language proficiency in their interactions with care providers and other hospital personnel. Interpreting, when necessary, written materials for complex and/or sensitive medical and personal information, including diagnostic and surgical procedures, treatment plans, medical histories and medical, social and psychological assessments. Interpreting for patients in their effort to schedule appointments, resolve billing problems and other related matters. Identifying, assessing and facilitating understanding of cultural differences impacting communication

  • Interpreting for non-patient hospital meetings as needed

  • Maintaining records of daily activities, including a log of daily patient interactions

  • Working as a team with other interpreter staff

  • Orienting, training, and supervising student interns as needed

To qualify, you must have:

  • Current National Certification in American Sign Language is required

  • A Bachelor's Degree is required

  • Two to three years of previous experience interpreting, including interpretation in medical settings is required

  • Analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles

  • Strong communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions. Work also requires well developed writing skills
