Engineering Project Manager I

The J.R. Simplot Company is a diverse, privately held organization, with roots firmly planted in agriculture and agriculture-related businesses. The J.R. Simplot Company is a true farm-to-table company with operations that touch every aspect of agriculture, including seed production, farming and ranching, plant sciences, fertilizer manufacturing, food processing, commercial product development, and distribution.

Summary

The Project Manager role will support the Global Food Group through the execution of strategic manufacturing capital projects. This role will be responsible for managing and supporting multiple complex capital projects (typical project value of $15MM) under direct supervision from a Senior Project Manager. These projects include implementing new equipment or processes across multiple site locations in North and South America delivering value and growth potential for the Global Food Group.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Project Management leadership managing the detailed design and execution phases of strategic capital projects with the direct responsibility of the following:

  • Developing project schedules to include the detailed engineering design, execution, equipment commissioning, and startup. A firm grasp using scheduling software is required (MS Project).

  • Leading the effort with a multi-discipline technical design team to create a detailed project cost estimate.

  • Tracking and managing action items through directing and delegating work assignments ensuring on-time project team deliverables

  • Tracking and managing project budgets. A firm grasp using, creating, and managing spreadsheets is required (MS Excel)

  • Lead purchasing activities with internal departments to manage equipment purchases utilizing purchasing logs. (Procurement and Legal departments) The PM will be responsible for tracking and managing project purchasing logs.

  • Identify construction and installation contractor pool and work closely with procurement and legal departments to enter into master services agreements (MSA).

  • Review equipment contracts and establish required equipment delivery dates aligning with project schedule and project execution plan.

  • Developing project cash flow forecasts.

  • Review and approve all project invoices and process for payment.

  • Process and manage all budget change orders utilizing change order management process.

  • Reviewing installation bid packages and manage the bidding process working closely with procurement.

  • Developing execution strategy through the preparation of a project execution plan.

  • Work closely with project team to manage project scope.

  • Lead and manage interactive planning sessions with vendors and contractors.

  • Lead and manage startup and commissioning teams.

  • Develop and manage an active risk register for assigned projects.

  • Work closely with plant operations team to identify required equipment spare parts and tracking and managing the deliverable dates.

  • Manage construction managers and contractors during project installation.

  • Track and manage resource coverage schedules during all phases of the project.

  • Lead project closeout and prepare capitalization with internal departments (Asset Management and Finance)

  • Lead project lessons learned activity documenting and presenting to management at the close of the project.

  • Prepare project status reports and update presentations to senior management and other key stakeholders. (MS Powerpoint)

  • Other tasks related to project management as required.

Typical Education

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university

Relevant Experience

  • 3+ years related project management experience and/or training

  • Experience in planning and execution of capital projects including budget development and tracking.

  • Experience in managing technical consultants and construction staff.

  • Excellent interpersonal, and written and verbal communications skills.

  • Knowledgeable of Food Plant Operations is a plus.

Skills

  • Possess and can demonstrate effective thinking and behaviors as it relates to leadership skills and competencies. (esp. drive for results, building effective teams, passion, collaboration, urgency and conflict resolution)

  • Ability to lead multiple small projects across multiple sites simultaneously; including compressed project (and installation) timelines in an operating food manufacturing facility.

  • Strong business acumen to understand and deliver the most cost effective project or asset allocation to the Business.

  • Has led multiple capital projects in the food industry (including estimating, scheduling, food safe equipment manufacturing and construction).

  • Efficiently and effectively led multiple project teams to successful project delivery.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills to effectively communicate to project team and senior leaders.

Travel Requirements

  • International travel is required for this position.

  • Maximum travel not expected to exceed 50%.
