Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Assistant (Tenure-Track) Professor in Data Science at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing - Boca Raton, FL, who will assist with developing research and quality improvement projects related to healthcare and caring science. This position is a 9-month tenure-track faculty line. S/he will (a) work with a team to develop a data science concentration with a postgraduate certificate, (b) teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Data Science in the Healthcare/Caring Science domain, and (c) develop research and quality improvement projects related to healthcare. Responsibilities may also include data science course development, analysis of large data to discover trends and patterns, building predictive models using machine-learning algorithms, and employing ensemble machine-learning models as specified by researchers and stakeholders. The candidate will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on issues related to data science principles and analytical methods.

The FAU Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention (I-HEALTH, https://www.fau.edu/i-health/). I-HEALTH supports cancer, infectious diseases, and human health and dementia research, education, and community engagement programs across multiple FAU campuses and colleges. Faculty members of I-HEALTH qualify for pilot grants, research technology support, and subsidized use of the I-HEALTH Bioanalytical Core Facility. I-HEALTH faculty pursue research including therapeutic intervention strategies, development of novel diagnostics, environmental contributions to human health, and clinical trials.

The FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute (I-BRAIN, https://www.fau.edu/ibrain). I-BRAIN supports neuroscience research, education and community engagement programs across multiple FAU campuses and colleges. Faculty members of I-BRAIN qualify for pilot grants, graduate student fellowships, research technology support, and subsidized use of I-BRAIN Core facilities including the FAU Cell Imaging Core and Neurobehavior Core. I-BRAIN faculty pursue research across the full spectrum of neuroscience, ranging from genetic and molecular neuroscience, cellular and circuit analysis of brain function, behavioral studies in models and man, cognitive and computational neuroscience, and disease mechanism and treatment studies.

The position is anticipated to start in August 2024 for the Fall semester.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other faculty and staff on healthcare-related projects.

  • Support various projects' goals, feasibility testing, and success criteria.

  • Work independently and in coordination with other team members to deliver projects, providing frequent and detailed feedback to stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with the research team on machine learning projects, including exploratory data analysis, data visualization, data clean-up and augmentation, model training, and model evaluation.

  • Develop reproducible experiments using high-quality, well-established software development practices, including automated test/verification, version control, and proper code/project documentation.

  • Develop programming/coding to present results in Python Jupyter Notebooks, R, or similar tools.

  • Disseminate findings to healthcare and data science audiences.

  • Research new data science and machine learning developments and how they apply to healthcare.

  • Publish original data science research in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Developing research and quality improvement projects related to healthcare and caring science.

  • Develop a data science concentration with a postgraduate certificate.

  • Teach data science courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and mentor post-doctoral fellows.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ph.D. concentration in Data Science / AI or related areas, emphasizing healthcare data analysis and working experience in machine learning.

• Expertise in developing and implementing advanced analytics and machine learning models to explain or predict patients' and clinicians' behavior, experience, and outcomes.

• Ability to develop, document, and maintain analytical data files with variables derived from primary databases that are suitable and structured for statistical and predictive analytics.

• Experience with a range of digital health projects, from predictive analytics platforms to population health management systems.

• Experience with machine learning models and concepts, such as predicting analyses, deep neural networks, transfer learning, and data tabulation and imaging.

• Familiarity working in a cloud environment (e.g., AWS, MS Azure), Git, Databricks and data visualization frameworks (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).

• Experience with version control tools, such as Git and GitHub.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of explaining the different aspects of projects and experiments to diverse audiences using textual and graphical explanations.

• Fosters and creates educational opportunities where all student populations thrive.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Post-doctoral experiences in data science.

• A record of accomplishment of prioritizing and coordinating multiple tasks.

• Familiarity with caring science theories and applications to data science.

• Familiarity with healthcare databases, such as All of Us and TriNetX.

• Familiarity with healthcare concepts like DICOM, EHR, FHIR, and laboratory data proficiency.

• Oversee various Experience data management projects using the REDCap data collection/data management system to create and manage project forms, surveys and databases and serve as a technical resource for REDCap-related issues.

• Demonstrated knowledge of the US Health Care System, including standard healthcare coding systems such as ICD 9/10 codes, and a clear understanding of HIPPA compliance practices.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently to plan and deliver complex projects and collaborate in a team environment.

• Familiarity with the scholarly publishing process, demonstrated by authorship of papers in peer-reviewed journals and attending professional meetings, presentations, and workshops.

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an inclusive environment among faculty, staff, and students.

• Experience developing curricula and post-graduate certificates in data science.
