Janitor Job Description

The external and internal appearance of a building is reflected on the occupants. It is important for a janitor, or custodian, to be careful and thorough in cleaning and tidying the premises

The ideal candidate will be experienced in a janitorial role focused on building upkeep. A keen eye for detail and diligence are imperative in custodial maintenance jobs.

Essential Functions

  • Cleans and maintains buildings/facilities. Performs heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish.

  • Complies with all safety, security, compliance, and quality standards and procedures established by the Company, Clients, and regulatory authorities

  • The janitor must be flexible and willing to complete all tasks that are assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them. Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.

  • Sometimes using ladders, dusts and washes furniture, walls, machines, and equipment; cleans ceilings and dusts and polishes light fixtures.

  • Moves cabinets, boxes, furniture, crates and equipment to clean areas, either manually or by using hand trucks

  • May remove stains from such surfaces as rugs, drapes, walls, and floors using chemicals and cleaning solutions.

  • Mixes water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications

  • Cleans and vacuums carpeted areas, including application of spot cleaning treatment

  • Gathers and empties trash

  • Wipes and cleans tabletops, chairs, and equipment in food areas

  • Cleans and polishes furniture and fixtures

  • Services, cleans, and supplies restrooms

  • Periodically cleans overhead vents, dusts blinds, and polishes wood furniture

  • Cleans interior partition glass, windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees

  • Must keep supply closet/areas neat and orderly and maintain equipment in good working order

Qualifications:

  • Ability to provide cleaning services within a commercial, industrial or residential environment.

  • Demonstrated history of related cleaning experience preferably with a major institution, and a solid work ethic.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to safety policies and procedures

  • Understand the employee handbook, hazard communication program, bloodborne pathogen procedure and all safety policies and procedures.

  • Participate in scheduled safety training.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Push and pull up to 50 lbs.

  • Stands and moves within assigned work area, or building for 6 to 7 hours (excluding breaks and lunch)

  • Some bending, stooping and reaching as necessary to complete the work
