This is the journeyman level of skilled work in preventive maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of gasoline and diesel automotive and heavy public work equipment. Work involves the performance of preventive maintenance, repair work on automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks, tractors, construction equipment, street sweepers, firefighting, police and other related auxiliary equipment. Duties involve all associated mechanical trade tasks. Employees in this class are required to weld, troubleshoot equipment, and secure parts and complete adjustments and repairs autonomously. Work is performed under general supervision and is normally reviewed upon completion through the test driving of equipment, work reports prepared, and through the observation of results obtained.

Performs general overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks, tractors, construction equipment, street sweepers, firefighting equipment, police and other public works vehicles and equipment.

Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and lighting systems, engines, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; repairs and installs hydraulic controls, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems; tunes engines using standard testing equipment.

Performs repairs and rebuilding of salt distribution equipment and snow plows.

Performs preventative maintenance on all fleet equipment.

Performs mechanical repair and adjustment work on firefighting trucks, automotive and auxiliary equipment including water pumps and light plants.

Prepares standard repair and maintenance work reports on all jobs performed.

Performs related work as required.

Performs up fitting of new equipment to required standard of the City and associated departments.

Disassembles equipment and components and inspects for wear and damage.

Performs diagnostics and repairs to all systems.

Ability to read and explain wiring, hydraulic, air systems and water schematics.
