Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Archivist in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

The Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives seeks to hire an archivist to assist in its mission to collect, preserve, and make available the historic records of Jewish Detroit. This position will assist the director in all aspects of the archive’s daily activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Process physical and born-digital collections and write finding aids.

  • Digitize assorted media and upload it to the archive’s PastPerfect database.

  • Answer research queries in a timely manner.

  • Special assignments that include outreach, exhibits, programs, and social media.

    Physical Demands/Additional Requirements:

  • Occasionally required to walk, stoop, bend, and reach overhead.

  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs.

  • Occasional evening hours may be required.

    Education and Experience:

    Required

  • MLS/MLIS or equivalent advanced degree.

  • Certificate in Archival Administration or equivalent degree.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively within and outside of the archives with staff, donors, and community members.

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.

  • Ability to work in a one-room space with distractions from volunteers and researchers.

    Preferred

  • Prior archives experience, including processing physical collections.

  • Knowledge of PastPerfect.

  • Familiarity with Detroit’s Jewish community.

    This position is part-time, 22.5 hours a week, at a rate of $25/hr.
