Position Title : Structural Engineer I, II, or III (Civil)

Position Purpose:

As an entry level position, this position applies standard practices and principles to specific assigned structural and architectural work. The incumbent also performs material evaluations, project inspection, and may assist with construction coordination for retrofit or expansion of existing and new plant, transmission, and fuel supply facilities. The incumbent may use prescribed methods in addition to application of standard practices and principles to complete smaller projects and assist experienced engineers on projects of varying scope. The incumbent carries out assignments under the direction of the Supervisor of Structural Engineering. This position is identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position which may involve physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems. Essential Functions:

  • Provide structural engineering support for projects as assigned, including structural design work related to new or modifications of generation and transmission related facilities. This includes preparation of detailed specifications and drawings using industry standard codes and facility specific design criteria, technical assistance with the bidding process, and other technical assistance during project execution, as needed.

  • Develop structural and architectural drawings in support of projects as assigned, including plans, sections, elevations, details, and 3-D models (BIM) using Autodesk products (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks).

  • Perform technical engineering studies and investigations on various assigned engineering problems under the supervision of experienced engineers.

  • Typical work functions include providing engineering for general plant and building layout, building and equipment foundations, structural steel, masonry, and concrete walls (including retaining walls), building floor and roof structures, structural requirements for building envelope, communication structures, transmission structures, structural pipe supports, lifting devices (cranes and monorails), and fall protection safety devices.

  • Review vendor and consulting engineering drawings and specifications to ensure that the design for the work is completed in a timely, efficient manner, and that the design reflects the philosophy of Basin Electric. With the assistance of experienced engineers, initiate, review, or recommend design changes on projects, as required.

  • Provide engineering construction support for projects (i.e., shop drawing review, design clarifications, etc.) and construction and contract coordination, as well as field and shop inspection, as needed or assigned.

Qualifications:

Structural Engineer I:

  • A four-year degree from an Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) accredited Civil Engineering program with an emphasis in structural engineering.

  • Exposure to computer-aided drafting/design software.

Structural Engineer II:

  • A four-year degree from an Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) accredited Civil Engineering program with an emphasis in structural engineering.

  • Three years of related structural engineering experience, which includes computer aided drafting design.

  • Broad knowledge of general engineering principles and practices.

  • Experience developing 2-D or 3-D structural models with computer-aided drafting and structural design software.

  • Requires an engineer-in-training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification.

Structural Engineer III:

  • A four-year degree from an Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) accredited Civil Engineering program with an emphasis in structural engineering.

  • Six years of related structural engineering experience, which includes computer aided drafting/design.

  • Broad knowledge of general engineering principles and practices.

  • Proficient developing 2-D and 3-D structural models with computer-aided drafting and structural design software.

  • Requires an engineer-in-training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to manage time with multiple active projects, good interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in a project team environment.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Valid driver’s license.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:

This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and to move about the office building, occasional reaching below and above shoulder level, climbing, constant use of a keyboard/computer and other office productivity machinery, bending, kneeling, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds. It also requires good finger dexterity and hand coordination. This position requires the ability to communicate and must be able to clearly exchange accurate information. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to extreme heat/cold, dirt, fumes, chemicals, vibration, and noise. This position requires the use of measuring instruments and surveying equipment. Frequent travel by air or vehicle to project sites is required. The incumbent must be able to analyze data/reports, conduct research, implement recommendations, coordinate projects, develop plans and specifications, present information to others, and work under pressure to complete assignments. The incumbent will occasionally be required to work at heights up to 600 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards; and in confined areas to inspect tanks, piping, or construction projects. This position must be able to become respirator qualified.
